Beth Phoenix Confirms Departure From WWE, Discusses Future Wrestling Goals

As a lifelong wrestling fan who has watched Beth Phoenix rise from a promising rookie to a Hall of Famer, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia mixed with anticipation about her recent departure from WWE. Having followed her career since her days as the Glamazon, I’ve seen her grow and evolve both in and out of the ring. Her decision to explore new opportunities feels like the natural next step for someone who has left such an indelible mark on the industry.

Beth Phoenix, a former WWE Hall of Famer, is no longer under contract with WWE after choosing not to renew it. After retiring from regular wrestling matches in 2012, she occasionally returned for brief stints. In the lead-up to her husband and fellow WWE Hall of Famer Edge’s (now wrestling as Adam Copeland in AEW) final match with WWE, she came out of retirement to team up with him. She also tried her hand at commentary for a while within NXT, joining in May 2019 and calling a total of 135 episodes before announcing her departure in 2021.

Beth Phoenix on Her Departure From WWE

“Phoenix explained on Insight with Chris Van Vliet that he is no longer bound by a contract with WWE, making him a free agent at present. Despite this change, his bond with WWE remains strong and he cherishes the time spent there. He feels compelled to investigate new opportunities and explore what else the industry has to offer. However, his connection with WWE hasn’t weakened. He has numerous friends within the organization, continues to admire their work, and holds a special affection for NXT. In essence, his love for WWE remains unchanged.”

Regarding her potential return to wrestling, she is considering it alongside her family, as has always been her practice. However, watching Adam return fully to the ring has sparked an enduring interest in her. To put it simply, this passion never fades. I’ll be open about that. At this stage of my life, stepping away from wrestling has been challenging because I find immense excitement when I watch it. Despite loving all aspects of my life, nothing ignites my career-related enthusiasm like wrestling does. I’ve experimented with numerous other ventures. So, what comes next? What will this new phase look like?

And I find wonderful things but nothing’s like performing in front of thousands of people and being able to pull those emotional strings and connecting with people in today’s world where I feel like connection has a buffer right now of technology. Wrestling is a very, like, just primal connection with the audience and community and it still brings that. If you go to a local indie show, and you get your box of popcorn and you’re sitting with others, I guarantee at some point, you’re going to hoot and holler and yell and scream and you’re gonna lose yourself in the story, just because it’s built in our emotional makeup” (h/t: POST Wrestling).

If she decides to carry on wrestling, it’s quite possible that AEW would be her destination, given that her husband is already under contract there. AEW stands to gain significantly from a seasoned wrestler like Phoenix in their women’s division, and many female wrestlers share this viewpoint.
