As a medical expert specializing in drowning injuries, I can only express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Bethany Hamilton and her family following the tragic loss of Andrew. Having survived a shark attack myself, I know all too well the fear and uncertainty that comes with such a traumatic event.
Bethany Hamilton and her family are mourning the loss of her nephew.
Andrew Hamilton, who was one of the six kids born to surf legend Timothy Hamilton and his wife Kyah Hamilton, tragically passed away at the age of 3. A week prior, he was found unconscious in a partially filled bathtub, leading Noah Hamilton, another brother, to make an urgent appeal for help.
On a deeply saddening note, I’ve learned that Andrew Samuel Hamilton, who graced this world on December 26th, 2020, took his final breath on October 17, 2024. This heartbreaking news came from a GoFundMe page established for his family, sharing the devastating details of a drowning accident that happened a week prior. Despite the relentless efforts of medical professionals to save him, all possible life-saving interventions were exhausted. I’ve been an ardent admirer of Andrew, and the thought of this loss leaves me speechless.
The note said, “It’s unbearably painful, and we yearn for Andrew more deeply than language allows. Yet, we don’t grieve like those bereft of hope. Instead, we celebrate with joyful anticipation, confident in the promise of God’s glory, to whom Andrew was dedicated at baptism, whose sacred blood purified Andrew, making him a cherished offspring and heir of heaven.
Bethany Hamilton and her family are mourning the loss of her nephew.
Sadly, Andrew Hamilton, the young son of Timothy Hamilton (an elder brother to the surf icon) and his wife Kyah Hamilton, passed away last week after being discovered unconscious in a partly filled bathtub. At just 3 years old, this tragic event has left us all deeply saddened.
A post on Timothy’s Instagram shared on October 19th stated that Andrew Samuel Hamilton passed away on October 17th, 2024. This was following a tragic drowning incident a week earlier, and despite all possible life-saving efforts, he could not recover from the injuries sustained.
Andrew is one of six siblings, and he is the second youngest among them. The news of his passing has deeply saddened not only his father and mother, Kyah, but also all their children: Thomas, Joshua, Matthew, Noelle, and John. This sorrow extends to his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even his spiritual family at Saint Matthew’s Lutheran Church, under the guidance of Pastor William Pierce.
Over the last week, the 38-year-old expressed gratitude for the church leader’s unwavering prayers by his son’s side and their comforting words from God that have nurtured our spirits.
Timothy stated, “It’s unbearably painful, and our longing for Andrew is beyond what words can convey. Yet, we don’t grieve like those who haven’t hope. Instead, we find joy in the firm belief in the splendor of God, to whom Andrew was baptized, whose priceless blood purified Andrew and made him a child and heir of heaven.
Bethany, 34, also shared her own tribute.
The athlete posted on Instagram, “The Almighty has taken my dear nephew Andrew under His tender protection.” Although our family will deeply miss him, we believe that he is now experiencing immense happiness in the presence of Jesus.
She continued, “Here is a prayer of faith that was prayed by my brother, and our whole family, this last week. This prayer paints so incredibly what it is to have faith. Faith is to trust that Gods will for our life is greater than our own. Thank you all for the love, prayers and support is this trying time.
Be blessed.”
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d like to share a heartfelt story that underscores the spirit of compassion and resilience. Bethany, a remarkable mother of four, who bravely survived a shark attack in 2003 that resulted in her losing her left arm, recently took action to extend a helping hand. In her memoir and the inspiring film “Soul Surfer,” she chronicled her journey of survival. Last week, moved by empathy, Bethany reached out publicly, seeking a renowned medical expert specializing in drowning injuries, with the hope of providing assistance to Andrew after his hospitalization in Oahu, Hawaii. This selfless act truly embodies the power of humanity and our ability to support each other during challenging times.
In a separate post, Noah Hamilton, the oldest sibling of both her and Timothy (who is 42 years old), had likewise asked for prayers concerning their nephew. Following Andrew’s passing, Noah too paid tribute to him.
Last week, Bethany Hamilton, a mother of four who lost her left arm in a shark attack back in 2003 and later shared her story through a memoir and the film “Soul Surfer,” appealed to find a medical expert specializing in drowning injuries to assist Andrew, who was recently hospitalized in Oahu, Hawaii.
On October 11th, it was reported on the fundraising page that Andrew suddenly developed a fever and vomited. Interestingly, he was relaxing in about six inches of water with Epsom salts in the bathtub, which happened to be only fifteen feet away from both the kitchen and living room.
The message continued, “He was found unconscious—which is baffling as he’s the strongest child of his 5 siblings at that age and an amazing swimmer, even in the open ocean. Chest compression began, he had a slight heartbeat. He spent a few hours at Wilcox hospital before medical evacuation to Oahu.”
Later on, they amended the page to indicate that Andrew had experienced kidney injury, developed brain swelling, and required assistance from a ventilator.
After his passing, Noah Hamilton, the oldest brother of Bethany and Timothy (aged 42), likewise paid tribute to the child. In this tribute, he recalled their surfing adventure together just two days prior to the unfortunate drowning incident.
He penned down on Facebook, “This was the only instance when I got to play alone with him. I’ve performed with his four elder siblings as well, and we had an amazing time. During our final wave, I knocked him off the board, and he managed to swim towards the shore amidst the powerful waves and currents trying to pull him back out to sea. This moment will forever be close to my heart.
Noah went on to say, “He was a robust young fellow, full of energy. The circumstances surrounding how he found himself in trouble with just six inches of water are unknown. However, one thing we can be certain about is that he’s now singing with angels and enjoying the embrace of his heavenly father. I love you, Andrew.
In his own words, I too paid homage to our late sibling, Noah Hamilton – aged 42. Just two days prior, we had embarked on a memorable surfing adventure together, which now serves as a poignant memory in the wake of his tragic drowning incident.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I recently penned down my heartfelt thoughts on Facebook: “This is the one instance where I got to play with him, all by himself. Previously, I’ve shared moments of fun with his four elder siblings. On our final wave, in a whimsical twist, I tossed him off the board and watched as he valiantly swam towards the shore against the relentless pull of the waves and undercurrents trying to drag him back into the sea. This moment will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Noah went on to say, “He was quite a powerful young lad. It’s a mystery how he found himself in trouble, submerged up to 6 inches in water. However, what we can be sure of is that he’s now singing with the angels and resting peacefully in his heavenly father’s loving embrace. I love you, Andrew.
