Today, gamers on Xbox and PC platforms have the opportunity to download a fresh, free offering from Bethesda. This particular title was initially released in 2015 and will commemorate its 10-year anniversary this year. Looking back at the games that were popular a decade ago, we find titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Bloodborne, Undertale, Rocket League, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, Batman Arkham Knight, Star Wars Battlefront, Halo 5: Guardians, Mortal Kombat X, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III. While the Bethesda game in question may not quite reach the same level of acclaim as these classics, it was a significant addition to a well-known series when it was first released.
To clarify, the free game under discussion is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. This game is actually a prequel to both Wolfenstein: The New Order (released in 2014) and its sequel, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (released in 2017). Although it didn’t get as many positive reviews as those two main series installments, it was generally better received than the spin-off game that came after them, which is Wolfenstein: Youngblood, released in 2019.
Originating from the same studio that created other games, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood was previously rated a 76 on Metacritic. However, it seems that this score might have been somewhat underrated based on user reviews. For instance, on Steam, an impressive 89% of 15,359 user reviews give the game a positive rating.
1946 finds the Nazis near victory in World War II, but fate isn’t sealed yet. In a desperate bid to shift the balance, the character B.J. Blazkowicz is sent on an extraordinary, two-part adventure into the heart of Bavaria… (for those unaware of the game’s premise)
In other words, how can gamers on Xbox and PC get Wolfenstein: The Old Blood for free? This game is being offered through Prime Gaming, a benefit that comes with having an Amazon Prime membership. During the month of March, one of the free games available from Prime Gaming is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. However, the codes are only valid for the Microsoft Store, meaning they can be used on PC and Xbox consoles. Once you redeem the code, you get to keep the game for free, regardless if your Amazon Prime subscription remains active or not.
Keep in mind that although Prime Gaming has verified a Bethesda game will become free today, March 20, they haven’t specified exactly when the release will occur. Once it becomes available for free, we’ll update this space with the details.
