Made by Japanese developer Doekuramori, it aims to translate 90s anime into a classic FPS.

But does it hit the mark, or does it leave us hanging like many other boomer shooters?

Originating from Japan, Doekuramori is an ardent fan of First-Person Shooter (FPS) games and an independent game developer. In the year 2020, he created The Citadel, a challenging FPS that attempts to evoke the spirit of a classic game called Marathon.

Furthermore, it intentionally displayed an anime-esque ambiance through its 90s-style design. However, on January 2nd, he launched Beyond Citadel, the follow-up to his initial Steam game.

Despite not achieving widespread popularity, numerous people who played it found it incredibly enjoyable. This was due to more than just its appealing graphics or the unique ‘feet’ mechanic. Instead, it offered one of the most intriguing gun-centric gaming experiences available.

The game, Beyond Citadel, carries many similar mechanisms as its predecessor, with some refinements included. You might find it mentioned on Steam that it offers authentic gunplay. Some players liken it to Escape from Tarkov encased within the aesthetics of Doom.

Despite appearing similar to classic arcade games, the firearms in this game behave realistically. It’s not simply a matter of loading up with more ammunition when firing; rather, based on the type of weapon, you might need to perform actions such as cocking it or adjusting the barrel before continuing the fight.

In this game scenario, you need to manually load the revolver’s starting gun by repeatedly hitting the ‘r’ key for each bullet in the chamber. To cock the hammer, use the left mouse button, and if you want to fire a spaghetti western-style rapid succession of bullets, click the right mouse button.

How about the shotgun? It can hold up to 6 rounds, but each one needs to be manually pumped. Interestingly, a sniper rifle allows you to reload even with the sights trained on the target!

However, I believe those seeking something fresh should definitely give it a try.

For some time now, it’s been a while since a First-Person Shooter (FPS) game caught my interest like Beyond Citadel did. I won’t judge anyone who swiftly backs away upon encountering an anime-style female character lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Each to their own.
