Could the actual Jack Rooke make an appearance? The creator of “The Big Boys” confesses that his acclaimed Channel 4 comedy is a blend of three characters: Jack, portrayed by Dylan Llewellyn and based on Rooke’s younger self but set in fictional situations; Jack, the sarcastic narrator voiced by Rooke himself; and the 31-year-old BAFTA award-winning writer and actor, Jack Rooke.
To add to the confusion, he mentions that there’s quite a resemblance between him and Jack’s cousin Shannon, and there’s also a hint of similarity with his friend Yemi.
After the initial, heavily autobiographical series, the character of Jack has been refined over time through collaboration between the two of them (the writers) and director Jim Archer.
Llewellyn found the tale of Jack’s exploration, a youthful gay individual managing his college experience after his father’s demise, strikingly authentic.
The actor mentions that he delved into Jack’s book [Cheer the F*** Up] and focused on the person he was at that time, not his current self. He empathized with Jack’s shyness in the initial series, interacting with new people and emerging from his shell. During his time at drama school, he grew more confident within himself and forged friendships – much like Jack, he also became more outspoken.
It’s quite unusual to act in a way that resembles your superior, but the strengthening relationships among Rooke and his fellow actors have made it more bearable. The author has noticed a striking similarity between Jack and his friend Danny, and the friendship that developed between Llewellyn and Jon Pointing.
Behind the scenes, there have been bowling evenings and dinners, such as one that was staged as if it were Llewellyn’s birthday, all in order to secure a cake.
Llewellyn mentions, “I’m quite inquisitive by nature and I often pose questions to Jack about what he would do in certain situations. I feel completely at ease expressing my thoughts on how to optimally portray the character, and I truly hope Jack feels just as comfortable with that.

In Season 3, the story begins by depicting Jack’s 21st birthday (even though he is now 32, Llewellyn maintains a youthful appearance suitable for this role), and an extremely painful sunburn incident during a summer vacation with friends in Greece – a predicament Jack has never encountered before since it was his first visit to this location.
Although it may seem more like a work of imagination now, the feelings behind it are rooted in reality. I create scenarios that are amusing to the characters, even if they’re not directly supported by factual evidence.
In this series, Jack’s wardrobe strongly suggests a resemblance to that of his youth, but there’s no concrete proof provided to support this claim. The beret is prominently used throughout the show, hinting at Jack going through a rather pretentious phase.
As the series progressed, he noted that Llewellyn has gradually relied more on his knack for blending vulnerability with humor through physical means.
In Rooke’s words, “People adore the character as Dylan skillfully portrays a broad spectrum of feelings – he captures both the delicate nuances of vulnerability and the thrill when he exhibits bravery.
In this show, there’s a palpable strain between characters Jack and Danny, which is so intense that watching a specific scene in episode 5 often leaves me in tears. It’s as if I’m feeling a strange sense of pride, much like a doting mother might!

A shared moment of pride for them both occurred when they watched the Pride 2022 edition of Celebrity Gogglebox, specifically focusing on presenter Rylan’s reaction to the finale of season 1. “He’s consistently supported the show, and I included him in this series with a small role,” Rooke discloses. “He portrayed an unruly version of himself exceptionally well, aligning perfectly with our humorous style.
However, the narrative primarily revolves around Jack and Danny’s journey, culminating at their university thesis submission. Is it Rooke’s intention to trace their lives beyond their college years?
Previously, I’ve been eager to start writing each new series, but this time, I plan to slow down and think about what comes next. It seems like our show is still developing, but for now, the characters are left in their appropriate places. We’ll have to wait and see if I decide to move them out of their current circumstances and place them in a new situation.
Indeed, he mentions that he intends to use Llewellyn in more ways: “Indeed, I’d like to work with him again, possibly in a new and unexpected role. Intriguingly, I have considered making him a villain – a truly chilling character, indeed.
As a film enthusiast, whenever Jack pens a script, I yearn for a part in his masterpiece, if he’d let me. I don’t wish for Big Boys to conclude – instead, I dream of it evolving into an ongoing American series, reaching its 12th season. However, we must confront the truth…
