Big Boys Finale: Shocking Fate of Danny Revealed!

***Warning: Major spoilers for Big Boys finale ahead***

This article includes discussion of suicide that some readers may find upsetting.

In simpler terms, the conclusion of Jack Rooke’s growing-up narrative, titled “Big Boys,” unfolded in a fittingly amusing yet poignant manner.

Throughout the series, audiences found themselves traveling back to the year 2016, introducing us to Jack (played by Dylan Llewellyn) and Danny (portrayed by Jon Pointing), who are embarking on a new phase of their lives at Brent University.

Though the team experienced a mix of highs and lows, subtle hints throughout the episodes indicated an underlying unease about what was to come. And in the final episode of season three, we discover the reason behind this tension.

Over the span of the third season, Jack experiences an enlightenment about his sexual identity as a gay man. On the other hand, Danny – who was previously self-assured and boastful – seems to be wrestling with challenges more intensely than before.

Struggling under the weight of my grandmother’s deteriorating health, family turmoil, academic pressures, and my relationship with Corinne (Izuka Hoyle), I find myself increasingly isolated as I grapple with these challenges alone, relying on my own strength to navigate this complex maze.

In episode 5, following a break-up with Corinne, the passing of his grandmother, and realizing he needs to redo his university’s final year, Danny finds himself feeling uncertain and unsure about what to do next.

On his way to his grandmother’s place in Margate, he has a momentary connection with his father, but is left devastated when his father ultimately decides to visit the pub over spending time with him.

He heads off to his nan’s house in Margate, and briefly connects with his dad there. However, his heart is shattered when his father opts for a trip to the pub rather than spending quality time together.

Upon learning that his cousin has been incarcerated once more, this time for armed robbery, Danny retreats entirely, mysteriously closing his bedroom door to the viewers’ gaze, casting doubt on what lies ahead for him.

What happened to Danny in the finale?

Sadly, at the start of the final episode, it’s revealed that Danny didn’t survive and chose to take his own life.

In an emotional scene overlooking Margate’s shoreline, the show’s creator Jack Rooke (who now portrays the character Jack) shares a poignant conversation with Danny about the reasons behind his actions, the things he has missed in the past years – such as the increase in cost of Tesco meal deals – and how strongly his spirit lingers even after a decade.

At parting, Danny confides that he didn’t prefer his demise in the manner it occurred, and wishes for a different conclusion instead.

So Jack decides to write it for him.

What is Danny’s new ending in Big Boys?

Back in the year 2016, amidst a fabricated recollection, Danny finds himself rescued by Jules, a vibrant and benevolent student union representative, who was just a tad overzealous.

Spending the night at his grandma’s place, Jules embraces him and together they fix the door that Jules had broken in order to reach him. (In this version, I tried to simplify the sentence structure and use more common phrases like “spend the night” instead of “the evening with.”)

The following day, Jules takes Danny to the university, making a stop at his preferred spot, Fleet Service Station, for some fun gaming and a quick bite to eat along the way.

There, I confess my deep affection for my job as a student representative, but I’m eager for new challenges. I extend an offer for an apprenticeship, aiming to groom you as my successor, and luckily, you graciously accept this opportunity.

While he steps away momentarily, Jules phones advisor Tim to inform him that Danny is alright and returning shortly accompanied by her. Jack had given them a heads-up, so they both stay put, waiting calmly for his arrival.

After being reunited, Jack and Danny attended a graduation ceremony where they met Corinne’s relatives. Meanwhile, it was revealed that Shannon, Corinne’s cousin, is also planning on attending university.

Danny is present as well to support Jack during their encounter with Alison Hammond, whom he unintentionally struggles to impress.

Not long after that, they began preparing for the 2016 fresher’s ball, and during the event, Danny and Jack danced together, reminiscing about the three university years they spent together.

The show concludes with fully grown Jack perched at a tavern, and as the story wraps up, he offers a defiant gesture to the camera – a symbol of their deepest bond between him and Danny – by raising his middle finger.
