Big Mouth’s 2 Most-Wanted Guest Stars the Netflix Series Failed to Get Revealed by Nick Kroll

The popular series Big Mouth, which has been running for eight seasons, is coming to an end. Although it has garnered numerous awards (winning multiple Annie Awards and receiving Emmy nominations) and boasts a high-profile cast, the show’s creators have expressed regret over not being able to secure their top two desired guest stars during its run.

In a recent chat, the entertainer-scribe-humorist disclosed that Lady Gaga and Howard Stern were the famous voices he missed out on impersonating.

Nick Kroll Reveals Big Mouth’s Failed Attempts to Cast Lady Gaga and Howard Stern

During its span, Big Mouth amassed more than 200 guest stars. Steve Buscemi, known for his roles in shows like Boardwalk Empire and films such as Reservoir Dogs, lent his voice to the character Mr. Pink, a cat, in the last season. Notable Oscar winners like those from movies such as Get Out and Nope made appearances. Additionally, comedy greats such as Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph consented to voice hormone monsters and contribute songs about puberty.

Yet two dream guests remained out of reach.

In my sharing, I have to confess that we aimed high and reached for the stars, trying to secure Howard Stern for our project, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. However, let me tell you, Howard was a towering influence on our show. He’s more than just the best; he’s the king in his field, an unparalleled inspiration.

Kroll’s regret about unrealized possibilities is entirely understandable. There’s a clear connection between Stern, who rose to media stardom due to his bold explorations of sexuality, and the kind of content found in “Big Mouth.” Andrew Goldberg, one of the show’s co-creators, shared their disappointment: “We truly wanted Howard Stern to be part of the show; unfortunately, he didn’t participate, and we were no exception.

The award-winning actress and renowned pop sensation Lady Gaga, who won an Oscar for ‘A Star Is Born’, was just as evasive. As they attempted to secure her participation, the team discovered that she was already occupied, joked Kroll. Co-creator Mark Levin added more details: “We tried to get hold of Lady Gaga too, but it seems she’s a busy lady.

In the final season, the emphasis on significant musical scenes intensifies the poignancy of a missed connection, yet underscores the series’ exceptional storytelling ability. Unlike many animated shows where characters remain static in time, “Big Mouth” allowed its main characters to mature – and so did the narrative itself. As Kroll put it, “Our show progressed, our characters grew, moved through time, evolved, and changed, and this was a delightful aspect of creating the series.

Big Mouth is now streaming on Netflix.
