92-year-old Bill Byrge, renowned for his humorous roles in the Ernest film series, has sadly passed away in Nashville today. This was announced on Facebook by his cousin, Sharon Chapman, who did not disclose the cause of death. The beloved character actor, best known as Bobby in films like “Ernest Goes to Jail”, left a lasting impression without mentioning the specific reason behind his passing. On Facebook, Chapman posted: “Today at noon, my cousin Bill Byrge passed away in the Nashville area. He was an individual who could make people laugh effortlessly. You might recognize him as the ‘Bobby’ character from several Ernest movies featuring Jim Varney. I used to tease him about being a ‘star’ within our family, but he truly embodied it. Despite growing up poor, his mother instilled in him love, respect, and faith, qualities that he shared with everyone. Today, heaven received a kind soul. I miss you already, Billy. Can’t wait to see you soon.
Prior to becoming a full-time actor in the ’90s, Byrge had been employed full-time at the Metro Nashville Public Library. However, his acting career began earlier with his debut in the 1985 film “Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam,” where he acted alongside Jim Varney. In this movie, Byrge portrayed a Gas Station Attendant, but he would later become known for his character Bobby in the 1988 film “Ernest Saves Christmas.
In 1988, he took on the same character in the 13-episode Saturday morning show titled “Hey, Vern, It’s Ernest!“. The pair first gained prominence in the 1990s with the hit movie “Ernest Goes to Jail“, and went on to produce “Ernest Scared Stupid ” in 1991 and “Ernest Goes to School ” a year later.
In the year 2000, Varney sadly passed away, but unlike Bobby, Byrge continued to be involved in another franchise film. Specifically, he starred in a humorous spin-off movie named “Billy & Bobby The Wacky Duo On Vacation” alongside Billy Dee. Interestingly, Byrge also took on the role of producer for this comedic project.
