Surprising everyone, including political spectators, political humorist Bill Maher – known for his vocal democratic leanings – shared an unexpectedly favorable tale about his latest meal with President Donald Trump. He described the encounter as more than just civil; in fact, he found it quite enjoyable.
69-year-old Maher is the longstanding host of HBO’s late-night talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher, which combines humor, interviews, and political analysis. Over time, Maher has established himself as a boldly liberal commentator, frequently poking fun at Republican figures using sharp wit. His contentious relationship with Donald Trump stands out, with Maher repeatedly portraying the president as a narcissist or authoritarian, while Trump has retaliated by labeling Maher as a “creep” and an “ignorant fool.
Maher’s recent stance has become more independent from his past, even though he remains a liberal Democrat. Lately, he’s been vocal about his criticisms towards the leftward drift in American politics. Topics such as male participation in women’s sports, the influence of ideology in educational institutions, and what he terms “the woke movement” are among those he has openly opposed. Moreover, he’s had disagreements with the hosts of The View, criticizing their biased perspectives and doubting the emerging dogma within progressive thought.
Although Maher’s fundamental political values remain unaltered, his unwillingness to adhere to the activist consensus within his party has resulted in criticism from many of its members. Previously viewed as a dependable advocate for the left, Maher now finds himself being branded a centrist by some – a label he contests, arguing instead that it’s the political landscape that’s evolved, not him.
In that context, the encounter between him and President Trump took place, leaving many surprised about it.

On the April 11th broadcast of Real Time, Bill Maher began the show with an extended discussion about his March 31, 2025 visit to the White House. The gathering also featured Kid Rock and Dana White, yet it was Maher’s exchange with Trump that garnered the most attention.
In a surprising turn of events, Maher stated that every aspect he had disliked about the individual seemed completely missing. On this particular occasion and in this man’s company, at least, these negative traits were nowhere to be found.
During the conversation, the outspoken TV host who’s often critical of the president revealed he carried a collection of past remarks hurled by Trump against him – terms like “scoundrel” and “foolish simpleton”. In jest, he asked Trump to autograph this list. To his astonishment, Trump obliged with a chuckle.

The talk show host expressed that he didn’t sense a need to tread carefully around him. He openly admitted voting for Clinton and Obama, but found it easier to converse with Donald Trump in a way he couldn’t with them. As a final note, he left the interpretation up to the listener.
Maher disclosed that Trump sought Maher’s thoughts on significant matters, such as the Iran nuclear deal – an issue where they held differing views. Remarkably, Trump appeared to listen attentively without becoming agitated or reacting impulsively.
“He didn’t get mad or call me a left-wing lunatic. He took it in,” Maher said.
He went on to contrast Trump with other powerful figures he’s met.
He mentioned, “I’ve talked to numerous influential individuals who are less networked compared to him. These people often lack eye contact, seem disinterested in the conversation because they’re preoccupied with moving on to their next task. Their responses don’t align with what was discussed. However, this is not the case with him.

The comedian also shared his surprise at Trump’s sense of humor.
Initially, he chuckles, Maher expressed his astonishment. In truth, I had never witnessed him laughing in public before. However, he does, even at himself, and it’s not insincere. Trust me, having been a comedian for four decades, I can identify a forced laugh when I hear one.
Maher himself pointed out that Trump presented him with a pile of his well-known red campaign caps – these were distributed in a room that had been linked to controversy during the Clinton era. However, he stressed that he didn’t feel obligated to align with Trump’s political cause or pose for a picture while wearing the hat. He highlighted that the encounter was not about politics but an uncommon and surprising moment of human connection instead.

The ultimate surprise arrived as Maher pondered the disparity between Trump’s personal conduct and the public persona he portrayed.
Maher stated in conclusion, ‘The White House doesn’t house an insane individual.’ Instead, someone frequently portraying an insane character on television resides there. To be honest, that’s a strange situation, but it’s not quite as bizarre as I initially believed.
