Billie Piper appears to slip up in pre-recorded Doctor Who: Unleashed special, teasing her return

As a movie enthusiast, let me share my take on that intriguing twist at the end of “Doctor Who’s” most recent finale, “The Reality War.” The mind-blowing moment when Ncuti Gatwa morphed into Billie Piper left many fans in a state of amazement. Yet, I reckon there might have been some behind-the-scenes team members who worked on “Doctor: Unleashed” with a hint about what was coming up next.

This is due to a minor mistake made by Piper during the recently premiered Unleashed commemorative episode, which celebrates the show’s 20th anniversary since its revival in 2005. When asked if she might rejoin the series, there was a hint of an error in her response.

As a film enthusiast, I find myself constantly captivated by the timeless appeal of certain movies. They seem to perpetually cycle through various channels, and each new generation that discovers them breathes fresh life into their legacy. Unlike many other endeavors I’ve pursued, these cinematic creations never seem to fade away, always staying relevant and vibrant.

Piper appeared as Rose Tyler in the show from 2005 to 2006, reprised her role in 2008 and 2010, and portrayed the AI weapon Moment in the 2013 special titled The Day of the Doctor.

Primarily, Piper conversed with David Tennant, who played the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors, for many of these special occasions. Additionally, other notable figures from Doctor Who’s history were interviewed during this time, such as Jodie Whittaker, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Pearl Mackie, and Mandip Gill.

Following the broadcast of The Reality War, Piper expressed in a statement: “It’s no secret that I adore this series, and I’ve often shared my desire to revisit the Whoniverse due to some of my most cherished moments there. So, when the chance came to set foot inside the TARDIS once more, it was an offer I simply couldn’t turn down. However, the details – who, how, why, and when – you’ll need to be patient and find out later.

Although it hasn’t been officially verified that Piper is portraying the Doctor, and no credits hinting at this were shown at the end of the episode, if she is indeed taking on the role, it would satisfy a prediction made by Ninth Doctor actor Christopher Eccleston three years ago.

In 2022, before Gatwa stepped into the iconic role, I mused aloud in a green room setting that Russell T Davies was returning to helm “Doctor Who.” My pick for the Time Lord? None other than Billie Piper, though Catherine Tate is fantastic, too. In my humble opinion, she’s the perfect fit for the Doctor.
