BioWare is Restructuring and Eliminating Roles for Mass Effect 5’s Development

For several years now, work has been underway on what is currently known as Mass Effect 5 (or whatever its final title may be). Since this science fiction role-playing game is evidently in the early stages of development, speculation about BioWare’s internal operations has intensified. The latest updates from the studio, however, could generate even more curiosity.

In a recent blog post, BioWare’s General Manager Gary McKay revealed that the upcoming installment of Mass Effect is currently under development by a team comprised of veterans who were involved in the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley. However, McKay mentioned that the project necessitates assistance from the entire studio, hinting at potential adjustments or modifications in the future.

Initially, a certain amount of BioWare team members are now working on tasks at different Electronic Arts studios that are currently in development.

After the launch of “Dragon Age: The Veilguard”, a key group at BioWare is currently working on the next installment of “Mass Effect”. This team, led by veterans from the original trilogy such as Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley and others, are spearheading this project. In line with our dedication to pushing boundaries during Mass Effect’s creation, we are striving to come up with innovative ideas for delivering an exceptional fan experience. During this period between full development cycles, BioWare is also rethinking its approach to work. (McKay’s words)

At this point in our project’s progression, we don’t need assistance from the entire studio. We’re fortunate to have an exceptional team here at BioWare, and as such, we’ve been proactive in matching many of our team members with open positions within EA’s other teams where their skills would be a great fit over the last few months.

According to IGN’s report, it appears that some members of the Dragon Age: The Veilguard development team have been let go from the studio. This has been corroborated by several ex-employees on social media, with editor Ryan Cormier, producer Jen Cheverie, narrative designer Trick Weekes, and editor Karin West-Weekes among those who have spoken up about it.

McKay indicates that BioWare is planning to transform into a more streamlined and specialized team following these updates. However, this phraseology mirrors his statements from August 2023 when BioWare announced layoffs affecting 50 employees, including multiple experienced writers. Notably, the game director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Corinne Busche, recently departed the studio to pursue an exciting RPG project elsewhere.

In more straightforward terms, it’s been announced that the game “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” didn’t meet expectations, with only about 1.5 million players. This underperformance is said to have led to a decrease of approximately $6 billion in the market value for its publisher, Electronic Arts (EA).
