The aftermath of the disastrous collapse of “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” persists, leading BioWare to undertake a substantial overhaul that strongly implies the studio is being drastically reduced in size.
On BioWare’s official blog, General Manager Gary McKay revealed a change in direction for the company, with their full attention now centered on the upcoming Mass Effect title. This decision essentially puts Dragon Age on hold following the disappointing response to its most recent edition.
While McKay portrays this as a fresh, invigorating phase for BioWare, it’s evident that the collapse of Veilguard has compelled Electronic Arts (EA) to take drastic measures. In essence, BioWare is being dismantled, with essential personnel being reallocated to different EA departments. Although the statement steers clear of directly stating layoffs, the tone implies that numerous developers may find themselves without a position.
A Studio in Crisis
Today, we’re gazing ahead and readying for a new phase in BioWare’s journey, as penned by McKay. As previously announced in August 2023, we are altering our game development approach to cater to the requirements of our forthcoming projects and uphold the highest quality expectations.
In my experience, the execution of Dragon Age: Veilguard fell short significantly, leading to a massive restructuring within the ranks of BioWare.
McKay made clear that a key group of developers at BioWare is now focusing on creating the next Mass Effect game, with experienced team members from the original series taking charge. Specifically, Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley will be leading this project. This announcement suggests that the team responsible for The Veilguard is no longer involved in the development process.
This encompasses Corinne Busche, the game’s director, who has moved on to another venture outside of BioWare. Although Bush stated her departure was voluntary, it seems unlikely that such a prominent exit wasn’t influenced by senior management given the game’s significant commercial flop.
EA has zero patience for major disappointments, and unfortunately, The Veilguard fell short in this regard, failing to deliver even half of the anticipated interaction as expected by the company.
EA’s Financial Nightmare
Following one of Electronic Arts’ (EA) most challenging financial weeks in recent memory, I find myself adjusting to BioWare’s restructuring. The disappointing performance of Veilguard and the weak holiday sales for EA Sports FC 25 have forced a significant reduction in our revenue projections. Consequently, EA’s stock has experienced a steep decline, dropping approximately 20% over just two days. This downturn has left investors questioning the company’s strategic path, with particular concern surrounding BioWare’s decision-making processes.
Before the release of The Veilguard, predictions estimated it would sell more than 10 million units throughout its lifetime. However, by the end of 2024, it managed to attract only around 1.5 million players. This game, which many anticipated as a victorious comeback for the Dragon Age series, has instead served as a reminder of how much the franchise and BioWare have declined.
McKay stated, ‘Given our current progress, we don’t need assistance from the entire studio right now. We are fortunate to have an abundance of skilled professionals here at BioWare. Consequently, we’ve made a concerted effort over the past few months to pair many of our team members with open positions in other EA teams where they would be a great fit.’
McKay mentioned that several BioWare employees are being reallocated or merged with other EA teams, which may signal imminent large-scale layoffs. When a studio undergoes such a transformation, it often leads to unnecessary positions being eliminated, and EA is unlikely to maintain an excessive workforce indefinitely.
The DEI Experiment Has Failed
A common complaint about “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” is its strong lean towards identity politics, which some feel detracts from the game’s overall quality in terms of storytelling and gameplay. Under Busche’s guidance, the game was promoted as a progressive reinvention of the “Dragon Age” universe, but instead of the intricate world-building that originally made the series popular, it seems to prioritize excessive character diversity over depth.
Fans who have been with BioWare for a long time are finding themselves distanced by the company’s change in focus, as they feel that the game “The Veilguard” lacked the depth and complexity expected from a traditional RPG. Instead, it seemed to be more of a sermon disguised within a gaming platform, which unfortunately didn’t manage to appeal to the sizeable audience Electronic Arts (EA) had anticipated.
Currently, BioWare finds itself in a situation where it needs to make changes, and the “Mass Effect” franchise, which enjoys goodwill among some fans, could potentially restore the company’s tarnished reputation. McKay’s blog post suggests that Electronic Arts (EA) is leaning on veterans of the “Mass Effect” team to guide the studio, implying that those involved with “The Veilguard” may not be trusted to lead BioWare moving forward.
BioWare’s Future on the Brink
McKay closed his statement with what read like a desperate attempt at reassurance:
Today’s developments aim to transform BioWare into a nimble, dedicated studio specializing in creating extraordinary Role-Playing Games (RPGs). Your continued backing is greatly valued as we embark on shaping a fresh chapter for BioWare.
For numerous enthusiasts, what’s been offered falls short and comes too late in the game. The harm has already been inflicted, and BioWare, once a highly respected RPG juggernaut, has lost its luster. The fate of the studio now depends entirely on the upcoming Mass Effect, and if it flops, BioWare might not make it through.
The crucial matter now is whether Experience Augmentation (EA) will adapt and avoid repeating its past errors, or persist with the problematic patterns that contributed to the initial downfall of Veilguard.
