The recent layoffs at BioWare, as detailed by Bloomberg, have significantly reduced the once-renowned role-playing game studio. Now, it’s reported to have less than 100 employees – a sharp decrease from the over 200 developers who worked on ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’, and an even more dramatic fall from BioWare’s heyday when the company was spread across multiple studios with a workforce exceeding 400.
Electronic Arts’ reorganization of BioWare initially appeared to be a means of redirecting talent towards other ventures, given that Mass Effect is still in its early stages (even though it was announced five years back). However, upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that this wasn’t merely a redistribution of resources; rather, it signified the end result of years of mismanagement and decay at BioWare, resulting in a nearly complete disintegration of BioWare as a significant development studio.
BioWare’s Rapid Deterioration Under EA
At its zenith, BioWare was widely recognized as one of the premier RPG (Role-Playing Game) studios globally, offering genre-setting adventures such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, under Electronic Arts’ guidance, the studio has been experiencing a slow but consistent downturn for about a decade now. This decline is characterized by creative disputes, studio mishaps, and a growing focus on live-service income generation rather than narrative excellence in each new project.
As a passionate cinema-goer, I can’t help but feel the sting of reality when I see a promising project getting axed. EA’s latest restructuring news about BioWare seemed to try and sugarcoat the layoffs, but the numbers tell a different story. Over half of the studio has been reduced since work began on The Veilguard, and the final blow was dealt after its disappointing box office run.
Initially, EA had planned to lend developers to other teams while Mass Effect was still in pre-production. However, once it became evident that The Veilguard missed its sales targets by almost 50%, these temporary transfers turned into permanent ones. This unfortunate decision led to the layoff of more than 20 additional team members.
From 400+ Employees to Less Than 100
It’s illuminating to understand the magnitude of BioWare’s decline by considering its position in past years.
- 2010: BioWare Montreal was established, eventually leading development on Mass Effect: Andromeda with a team of over 300 people.
- 2014: BioWare Austin had between 80-150 developers working on Shadow Realms, a game that was later canceled.
- 2017: Reports suggested 320 employees were working at BioWare Edmonton, the studio’s original flagship location.
- 2019: BioWare had a combined workforce of around 400-500 employees, spanning Edmonton, Austin, and Montreal.
Today, contrastingly, BioWare functions as a unified team with less than a hundred members, indicating that Electronic Arts (EA) may not have a long-term plan for the studio other than making one last attempt to rejuvenate Mass Effect.
Recently, BioWare has faced another setback, marking yet another instance in a chain of mistakes that have gradually weakened its position as North America’s top role-playing game (RPG) developer. Electronic Arts (EA), the company that owns BioWare, has damaged its reputation by frequently changing direction, implementing ill-conceived live-service projects, and failing to grasp the key elements that initially made BioWare a success.
It’s evident that games such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem served as red flags indicating that Electronic Arts was guiding BioWare off course. The Veilguard solidified this mistake, with its forceful approach to identity politics, alienation of long-standing fans, and misjudgment of what the franchise’s audience desired. Now, with BioWare at a low point, EA seems to be positioning Mass Effect as a desperate attempt to maintain the studio’s relevance.
