Gary McKay, the head honcho at BioWare, has disclosed that they’re reshaping the company while working on Mass Effect 5.
In his blog update, McKay shared that since the project has reached a certain development phase, the entire studio’s support isn’t necessary. Instead, he and his team at BioWare have been actively placing their talented colleagues with other teams within EA who have vacant positions that align well with their skills.
Although the blog suggests these changes are due to Mass Effect 5’s current development phase, it’s also plausible that BioWare’s recent struggle with Dragon Age: Vielguard sales could be a factor. Just last week, Electronic Arts disclosed in their preliminary sales report that Dragon Age: The Vielguard fell significantly short of expectations by an impressive 50%. A disappointing reality for any development team to face.
The recent developments in the news follow the departure of Dragon Age’s director, who received an opportunity she couldn’t refuse, causing quite a buzz among gamers. So, what transpired within BioWare? Was the studio secure? Will there be a fifth installment of Mass Effect?
Latest updates suggest the project is progressing, yet it fails to dispel our concerns about the game’s safety among fans like me. A string of underperforming games doesn’t inspire confidence for developers. Games such as Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and more recently Dragon Age: The Vielguard have all struggled to attract players effectively.
Following the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a key team at BioWare is currently working on the next Mass Effect game. This project is being overseen by veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and more.
Working on the latest version of a long-running franchise with experienced team members often indicates a promising project. Furthermore, McKay noted, “In line with our unwavering dedication to innovation throughout the creation and release of Mass Effect, we’ve decided to delve deeply into finding ways to offer the best possible experience for our fans. We are using this gap between full development cycles to reconsider our methods at BioWare.
Mike Gamble, previously known as the Producer for the second and third installments of the series, as well as the head Producer for Andromeda, is a notable figure. Preston Watamaniuk, who was the main designer for the entire original trilogy and now serves as Director for Mass Effect 5, holds an equally important position. Given their extensive background with the first three games of the series (let’s overlook Andromeda), it’s reasonable to believe that Mass Effect 5 might recapture audience interest and rekindle the charm reminiscent of classic BioWare productions.
Still, I hold out hope that this might be the case. I’ve managed to find it within myself to pardon the conclusion of Mass Effect 3, an act that takes considerable effort for me to admit.
