Birds of Prey’s Jordie Bellaire Wins Best Colorist (Golden Issue Awards 2024)

As a passionate comics enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of these extraordinary tales, I wholeheartedly concur with ComicBook’s decision to bestow the 2023 Golden Issue Award for Best Colorist upon Jordie Bellaire. Her remarkable talent for weaving a color palette that transcends the pages and elevates the art on every single panel is nothing short of astounding.

If color weren’t present in our beloved comics, they would be a monochrome blend of black and white – an alternative version, but still different. Picture Green Lantern without his signature green, Superman’s cape in a hue other than striking red, or even the cityscape as Spider-Man spins his webs against a backdrop devoid of color. Color plays a crucial role in the narratives unfolding within comic books, and 2024 was especially fortunate to witness remarkable work by gifted colorists who skillfully used every imaginable shade and tone to complement both words and artwork, breathing life into some truly extraordinary stories. As we bid farewell to this year, ComicBook is honored to present the Golden Issue Award for Best Colorist to recognize the exceptional talent of these dedicated artists.

And the winner of the 2023 ComicBook Golden Issue Award for Best Colorist is…

Jordie Bellaire for Birds of Prey!

Previously, Bellaire won our Golden Issue Award in 2021 for her work on Marvel Comics’ Black Widow, and this year she has done it again with DC’s Birds of Prey. However, the reason behind her consistent wins remains unchanged: Bellaire is an exceptional colorist whose skillful use of a color palette enhances every title she works on, making each piece not only visually appealing but also adding depth and a unique character to the art. The colors she uses are so vivid that they evoke emotions as much as they captivate the eye.

This year, Bellaire’s victory in Birds of Prey is just one of many titles she’s contributed to. Her exceptional coloring talents have made her an artist in high demand by not only superhero genre creators but also others. In addition to Birds of Prey, this year has seen her work on G.I. Joe, The Department of Truth, WoRldtr33, Duke, and numerous other projects. She’s also responsible for the vibrant colors in the amazing Absolute Wonder Woman series this year. What makes each of these titles unique is that Bellaire tailors her coloring to suit each one, rather than adhering to a single style. Her versatility and brilliance have almost reached legendary status, making her an excellent pick for this year’s Golden Issue.
