Compared to catchy, romantic titles like ‘With Love, Megan’, the title ‘Black Bag‘ might not be at the top but it certainly stands out more. It’s the latest movie from director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp, who have just completed their second collaboration after working together on the supernatural film ‘Presence’. This was only a short while ago.
Black Bag” – A Twisty Spy Thriller with Michael Fassbender as George Woodhouse, who’s married to Kathryn (played by Cate Blanchett). Both work for the Secret Intelligence Services under their superior, Arthur Stieglitz (Pierce Brosnan). However, it’s George who stands out due to his exceptional skills, especially in polygraphy. The story takes an unexpected turn when a hi-tech security device is leaked to the Russians, potentially causing mass casualties within a week. With time ticking, George suspects his own wife and invites four other suspects to a dinner party: Clarissa (Marisa Abela), Zoe (Naomie Harris), James (Regé-Jean Page) and Freddie (Tom Burke), Clarissa’s co-worker and lover. The dinner party unfolds as a game, where each guest makes a pledge on behalf of the person to their right. This is one of two intriguing dinner scenes that keep viewers guessing until the end.
In this story, we’re not dealing with the high-octane spy antics of James Bond. Instead, these spies are engrossed in their office work, which just happens to be highly technical and involves national security risks. The narrative revolves around deception, as we question who among them is lying. There’s a polygraph test that George administers, adding an element of intrigue to the dinner table conversations. Michael Fassbender’s character is subdued, observing everyone without raising his voice, giving off a blend of his characters from ‘Prometheus’ and ‘The Killer’. The plot offers unexpected twists and turns reminiscent of an Agatha Christie mystery. David Koepp, the writer, seems to have enjoyed experimenting with this mystery genre, considering his previous works include Spider-man, Jurassic Park, and Mission Impossible. Steven Soderbergh, the director, delivers another low-cost digitally shot film, showcasing a talented cast. However, Black Bag is another minor production from such an accomplished director. It would be great to see him tackle a project with more depth again soon.
