After a hiatus, the beloved Black Butler manga series by Square Enix is back in Monthly GFantasy magazine! The latest issue, released on April 18th, showcases Ciel and Sebastian, the main characters, on its cover. To mark this comeback, the current Monthly GFantasy issue comes with a free poster showcasing an illustration from the July 2024 issue of the magazine. As the series progresses, it’s moving towards its finale, hinting at its impending end.
I’ve been waiting patiently for new installments of “Black Butler” since last June, as it’s currently on a break. This popular manga has been around since 2006 and comprises 34 volumes so far, making it one of the enduring mangas still in publication today. With over 35 million copies sold, it remains a market favorite. The anime adaptation has also been running steadily since 2008, making it one of the most consistent series in the past seventeen years. If all goes well, we might be enjoying “Black Butler” until its 20th anniversary in 2026!
Why Was Black Butler on Hiatus for so Long?
Creating and maintaining a popular manga series in Japan is incredibly challenging. As a mangaka, you’re responsible for crafting the story, illustrating the manga, and assisting with inking – all within tight deadlines. It’s one of the most stressful workplaces in entertainment, making regular breaks essential to help authors rest and recharge. By 2024, Yana Toboso, the author of ‘Black Butler’, had been working for 18 years. Last summer, she decided to take an open-ended break from her manga.
Instead, Toboso clarifies that the hiatus wasn’t for a break but rather to devote more time to researching the climax of the series. This underscores her commitment to her craft and her desire to provide fans with a satisfying conclusion. Moreover, the manga’s resumption coincides with the recent anime adaptation, “Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc,” which commenced on April 5th, making it an opportune time for both.
The current installment in the Black Butler series is its fourth, and it’s being produced by A-1 Pictures, a studio that has previously worked on shows like Solo Leveling, Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail, and now, it’s CloverWorks Studio’s turn. Known for hits such as Darling in the Franxx, The Promised Neverland, My Dress Up Darling, Spy x Family, they took over production from 2014. They are responsible for the latest two anime adaptations, including the Emerald Witch Arc. According to GamesRadar, this series is expected to span 11 episodes, similar to the Black Butler: Public School Arc adaptation. This suggests that Emerald Witch will conclude in June or summertime. In contrast, the original Black Butler anime consisted of 36 episodes, while Black Butler: Book of Cricus had only 10.
