With a heart pounding like a drum, I can’t contain my excitement! After an agonizingly long pause, Yana Toboso’s masterpiece, Black Butler, is making its triumphant return to Square Enix’s monthly G Fantasy magazine. This comeback couldn’t be more perfectly timed, as the Spring 2025 anime season is just on the horizon, and the anime adaptation of this series will also be resurfacing, reuniting with the same production team that brought us the Public School Arc to adapt the highly anticipated and beloved Emerald Witch Arc from the manga. Officially titled by CloverWorks for the anime, I can hardly wait to immerse myself in the magic once again!
As an ardent fan of Black Butler, I’m thrilled to share that the manga is currently unfolding the Blue Revenge Arc – the eleventh storyline and one of the most gripping and tension-filled installments in recent years. This captivating arc delves deep into the sinister side of Undertaker and masterfully explores Ciel’s emotional turmoil, making it a must-read for any fan.
Although the wait for new content has been a challenging one, the anticipation for 2025 is building steadily among enthusiasts like myself. The upcoming season promises to be a memorable year for Black Butler fans, as it will adapt the eighth arc from the manga, bringing us even closer to the heart-pounding adventures of Ciel and his demon butler, Sebastian.
When Is Black Butler Coming Back?
In April 2025, the May edition of “G Fantasy” magazine will bring back the manga series that left fans hanging with Chapter 213, titled “The Butler, Escorting”, concluding the Blue Revenge arc in late 2024. As of now, there’s no word on where the story will head next, but given the ending of Chapter 213, we can expect Ciel to continue his efforts alongside Sebastian, their fellow servants Lao and Ran-Mao, aiming to shut down “blood collection facilities” hidden across England. Their objective is to defeat the rejuvenated Ciel Phantomhive, who regained his Earl title, exiled Ciel, and the ever-menacing Undertaker, who seems to be manipulating events once again.
Just prior to the manga resuming the “G Fantasy” storyline, starting on April 5, fans of “Black Butler” can look forward to watching the latest addition to the anime series adaptation. This upcoming installment will delve into the beloved Emerald Witch story arc that fans have been eagerly anticipating. Following the success of the manga’s Public School arc adaptation in 2024, CloverWorks has returned to handle the animation production with many of the same team members. Kenjirou Okada is back as director, renowned for his distinctive style from his work on various Shaft series that have taken the show’s gothic feel to new heights. Hiroyuki Yoshino also returns as the lead scriptwriter. Crunchyroll has secured the rights for the anime’s international release, which will include dubbing in English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and German.
Previously discussed, the Emerald Witch storyline is hands down one of the favorites among fans. Crunchyroll’s official synopsis for this arc goes as follows: “At the queen’s request, 13-year-old Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his loyal demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis, depart from England’s grim underworld and journey to southern Germany to probe a string of enigmatic deaths. According to legend, those who enter the Werewolves’ Forest are doomed to be cursed, but undeterred, Ciel and Sebastian press on to uncover the truth.” What sets the Emerald Witch arc apart is its eerie fairy tale atmosphere, with the ever-present danger of a werewolf looming over their investigation. Unlike the detective-style adventure in the Public School Arc, the Emerald Witch Arc can be likened to a high-risk game of Werewolf.
What’s Next For Black Butler?
2025 promises a significant year for Black Butler enthusiasts, but their anticipation is often overshadowed by the looming fear of another prolonged break or, even more dishearteningly, the series not resuming production. The gap between A-1 Pictures’ last adaptation, Black Butler: Book of Murder, and CloverWorks’ adaptation, Black Butler -Public School Arc-, spanned over a decade, which for anime fans feels like an eternity. Although CloverWorks swiftly moved on to adapt the Emerald Witch Arc, there hasn’t been any formal announcement regarding their plans to produce subsequent arcs.
If it continues, Black Butler has only grown more captivating over time. Notably, its ninth arc, the Blue Cult arc, delves deep into Ciel’s past, his emotional struggles, the origins of Sebastian, and numerous other critical aspects that flesh out the world. Naturally, the 10th and 11th arcs would also be significant additions to the animated series. Given that the show hasn’t shown any signs of reaching its conclusion yet, there’s a wealth of Yana Toboso’s universe still waiting to be brought to life on screen. Furthermore, since a new chapter of the manga is released monthly, if CloverWorks were to continue adapting the series, they wouldn’t need to rush keeping pace with the manga’s release.
