It appears that the era of taxi drivers engaging in trivial chatter, such as “Live here, do you?”, seems to be behind us, especially when it comes to mini cab drivers like Ian (Nick Frost). At first glance, he might seem like a typical cabbie, being quite large and gruff, but beneath this exterior lies a character that is far more complex and potentially unsettling. This becomes clear when he picks up Patrick (Luke Norris) and Anne (Synnove Karlsen), who are dealing with the news that their friend Ryan is moving back in with Anne. The revelation has caught them both off guard, much like everyone else, as Ryan seems to be emotionally blunt, comparable to attempting intimacy while wearing a hazmat suit.
Stepping into the title’s ominous black cab driven by the ever-talkative Nick Frost, I found myself seated alongside an uneasy couple. As we ventured down the eerie, mist-shrouded road at night, a chilling tale shared by Ryan over dinner began to manifest in our journey. The supernatural crept in, adding a sinister twist as Ryan fell unconscious, spectral apparitions of a deceased woman haunting us sporadically. Nick’s behavior grew increasingly erratic, hinting at a disturbing revelation.
In this film, Frost delivers a commendable performance, masterfully blending his characteristic roguish charm with the growing unease of a man prone to violence. This role marks a stark departure from his collaborations with Simon Pegg and his latest production, “Get Away,” indicates a fascination for more ominous subject matter. The film seamlessly accommodates Frost within this new character. Director Bruce Goodison skillfully creates an eerie ambiance, primarily confined to the black cab, where the suspenseful scenes and sudden startles are not predictable due to the score’s absence of foreshadowing. Although the storyline can be a bit convoluted at times and the pace slows occasionally, “Black Cab,” running for 88 minutes, is generally a well-executed low-budget movie that exudes an unsettling aura.
