As a seasoned gamer and long-time manga enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many Shonen Jump series, I must say that the revelation of Yuki Tabata, creator of Black Clover, favoring the one-sided fight between Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki in Bleach, strikes a chord within me. Having first read Bleach back in my college days, this fight was indeed a turning point that resonated deeply.
Black Clover, one of its final arcs, is set to resume later this month. The creator behind this popular series has recently expressed admiration for the intense fight between Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki from Bleach. It’s an exciting time for Shueisha, as they navigate significant changes in their Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. With several prominent series concluding this year, the publisher is now focusing on identifying potential rising stars among new series that could become the next big hits over the coming years.
Shueisha has assembled a group of Jump’s most renowned creators for the special “Jump Next Generation Battle Manga Award”. This panel includes the creators of popular series such as Yuki Tabata (Black Clover) and Tite Kubo (Bleach). To mark this occasion, they were asked about their favorite fights from other series. In response, Yuki Tabata was inquired about his preferred Bleach fight, and he highlighted the battle between Renji and Byakuya due to its “intense tension, speed, and impact”.
Why Black Clover’s Creator Loves Renji vs. Byakuya Fight
As a dedicated fan, I’d share that when asked about his favorite fight from Bleach, Tabata himself pointed out the intense duel between Renji and Byakuya during the Soul Society arc. This epic battle unfolded between Chapters 140 and 144 of Tite Kubo’s original manga, and it was clear that the power difference between these two characters made for a one-sided fight. Despite Renji unleashing his Bankai, he still found himself at a disadvantage compared to Byakuya.
Tabata started by describing the Bankai battle as brimming with intense tension, rapid pace, and powerful presence. He continued, expressing that Renji’s movements in unison with Ichigo during utter despair were particularly impactful. Tabata went on to say that both Renji and Byakuya’s actions and dialogue were so captivating that it was easy to become enamored with them. He explained how this battle resonated deeply within him, striking a chord during his part-time work before moving to Tokyo, and leaving an indelible mark on him ever since. In essence, the fight had a profound impact on Tabata at the right moment, much like many other fans at that time.
Why This Fight Is So Important In Bleach
In the anime adaptation of “Bleach”, the fight between Renji and Byakuya marked a significant milestone, a pivotal moment that set the stage for even greater and more historic battles yet to come (such as Thousand-Year Blood War). The Soul Society arc was where the series really found its rhythm, with Ichigo Kurosaki and his companions facing an imminent battle that exceeded their current capabilities. Viewers knew they were venturing into a conflict where the risk of losing their lives was very real.
In this scenario, there wasn’t an obvious villain for a while, and this was particularly evident during the fight between Renji and Byakuya. Fans rooted for Renji to somehow compensate for his power deficiency, but Byakuya wasn’t entirely in the wrong at that moment. Though it was later revealed that he was being influenced by Soul Society’s rules, at the time, he believed he was upholding just laws. It was actually Ichigo and the others who were intruding, and it was Renji who was betraying his Captain. This fight provided a new perspective on Byakuya, which paved the way for the later battle against Ichigo that fans still admire today. It’s no wonder that the creator of Black Clover appreciates it too.
