Black Clover Creator Loves Bleach’s Most One-Sided Fight

As a hardcore manga enthusiast who’s been around the block a few times, I can wholeheartedly agree with Yuki Tabata’s choice of the Renji vs. Byakuya fight as his favorite from Bleach. The tension, speed, and presence in that battle were absolutely electrifying, making it a fight that still resonates deeply even after all these years.

The popular manga series “Black Clover” is set to resume soon, marking another installment in its final storyline. The creator has been expressing excitement lately about a particularly lopsided battle from another manga – “Bleach”, featuring characters Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki. Shueisha, the publisher of this renowned magazine, is currently undergoing a significant transformation as several popular series in Weekly Shonen Jump have concluded this year. The company now looks forward to identifying upcoming talents who might spearhead the next wave of successful manga series in the coming years.

Shueisha has convened a group of their most prominent manga creators from Jump for a unique competition called the Jump Next Generation Battle Manga Award. The goal is to discover a new series. Notable participants include Yuki Tabata, creator of Black Clover, and Tite Kubo, creator of Bleach. In an exclusive interview, they were asked about their favorite battles from other series. For Yuki Tabata, he chose the fight between Renji and Byakuya in Bleach due to its “powerful tension, swift pace, and strong impact”.

Why Black Clover’s Creator Loves Renji vs. Byakuya Fight

In response to being queried about his preferred battle in the anime series Bleach, Tabata disclosed that it was the confrontation between Renji and Byakuya during the Soul Society storyline. This combat occurred between Chapters 140 and 144 of Tite Kubo’s original Bleach manga. In this fight, Renji has activated his Bankai, yet it is still evident that the power disparity between him and Byakuya remains significant. It was a turning point in the series where viewers began to perceive Renji differently, and this defeat was especially harsh during an arc marked by numerous disappointments. This scene resonated with Tabata as well due to its impact.

In simpler terms, Tabata described the Bankai battle as intense with an abundance of tension, speed, and power. Yet, it didn’t stop there; Renji and Ichigo synchronized their moves in a moment of overwhelming despair. Tabata reminisced that this fight, which he experienced while working part-time, deeply resonated with him and continues to captivate him even today. This battle struck a chord with Tabata at the perfect moment, much like it did for many fans back then.

Why This Fight Is So Important In Bleach

As a gamer, I’ve got to say that the fight between Renji and Byakuya in “Bleach” felt like a pivotal moment. The Soul Society arc was where the series really picked up steam, and it was clear that Ichigo Kurosaki and his crew were stepping into a battle way beyond their current capabilities. We knew they were treading on dangerous ground, and there was always the possibility that we might lose them. It set the stage for some of the more monumental fights we’re just starting to see now with Thousand-Year Blood War.

In this situation, there wasn’t a clearly defined villain for some time. This was particularly evident in the fight between Renji and Byakuya. Although fans wished for Renji to compensate for his power deficiency, Byakuya wasn’t completely in the wrong during that phase. It might be revealed later that he was influenced by Soul Society’s rules, but at the time, he believed he was upholding just laws. It seemed like Ichigo and their companions who were intruding on the scene, while Renji appeared to be betraying his Captain. This confrontation allowed fans to see a new side of Byakuya, paving the way for the later battle against Ichigo that is still fondly remembered by many today. It’s no wonder that the creator of Black Clover appreciates this scene as well.
