Broadcasters BBC and RTE have teamed up to produce two series based on Caimh McDonnell’s Dublin Trilogy book series for television.
In my creative journey, I find myself venturing beyond the foundational work of McDonnell’s epic saga, using it as a launchpad. This means that while I stay true to the essence of the original eight-book tale, there are certain departures and unique twists along the way, which is why my rendition is still categorized as a ‘trilogy’.
The initial book, named “A Man with One of Those Faces,” chronicles the events of Dublin resident Paul Mulchrone who finds himself a fugitive, pursued by someone intent on ending his life. Along for the ride are a compassionate nurse intrigued by mysteries and a volatile policeman.
As a cinephile delving into the intricacies of adapting these twelve episodes from one of eight possible novels, I’m yet to pinpoint which story will shape the final product most significantly. However, it seems plausible that the initial concept we’ve established could play a role in shaping the movie version as well.
Filming is currently taking place in the Republic of Ireland, featuring Ella Lily Hyland (“Black Doves”), Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones“), Philippa Dunne (“Amandaland”) and Packy Lee (“Peaky Blinders”) as the leading actors. At this point, we don’t know who these talented individuals will portray in the series.
The comedy actor Chris Addison, renowned for his work on Veep and The Breeders, has been chosen to take on the directorial role in the upcoming adaptation. This project, written by screenwriter Stuart Carolan, awaits its debut.
Carolan has admired Chris Addison, who shines in ‘The Thick of It,’ for quite some time. Working alongside him to create this outrageous tale has been an absolutely enjoyable experience.
Addison expressed his genuine excitement about collaborating with the creatively unconventional mind of Stuart Carolan in making this series. (Or, Addison is genuinely thrilled to work alongside the uniquely imaginative Stuart Carolan in producing this show.)
Starting from Caimh’s fantastic book, we’ve created something I consider a captivating blend of a mysterious and delightfully quirky storyline.

Eddie Doyle, the Head of Content Commissioning for BBC Northern Ireland, commented: “Tall Tales & Murder is a unique blend of the grim, the amusing, and the bizarre.
We can’t wait to invite you along for the exciting journey created by skilled professionals Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison.
