As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of Black Doves, I must admit that I was initially puzzled by the enigmatic presence of Marie in Reed’s apartment during the Christmas scene. However, upon learning about her role as a spy and the nanny to Helen and Wallace’s children, it all makes perfect sense now!
In an effort to clarify some misunderstandings about one of the last scenes from Black Doves, its creator Joe Barton has explained that a female character was depicted spending Christmas at the residence of spy master Reed (portrayed by Sarah Lancashire).
Following an exhilarating yet tumultuous series of events, Reed finds herself facing off against her agents, Helen (Keira Knightley) and Sam (Ben Whishaw), in their quest to untangle a complex web of deceit surrounding a covert government operation that involves a cover-up.
This adventure leads to challenging conflicts and enlightening moments for the long-standing companions, yet surprisingly, the conclusion of The Black Doves turns out to be fairly optimistic. Each principal character is allowed to pause their battles and simply savor the day’s pleasure.
Reed is found enjoying a champagne glass in her elegant residence, accompanied by a woman who, though unnoticed at first glance, has a significant presence seated behind her.
In an interview with GQ, Barton clarified: “Marie is their nanny, Helen and Wallace’s, she frequently appears in the series but can easily go unnoticed. She resembles Reed so much, they share a similar hairstyle.
“But no, she’s the nanny, so she’s been spying on them the whole time. Basically, everyone’s spy.”
It’s important to give credit where it’s due for those who might not have immediately recognized Marie’s significance – and I must admit, I fall into that category as well – Marie, portrayed by Molly Chesworth, may not have a large presence throughout the series, but she does play a crucial role in a pivotal scene with Helen near the end of the season.
It was then that she ended up staying longer than expected with the Webb kids, because neither Helen nor her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) arrived home by the arranged time. This oversight led the politician to grow wary of his spouse’s actions.
Marie’s unveiling as a Black Dove offers a partial explanation for Reed’s knowledge about the intricate aspects of Helen’s life, such as her doomed relationship with MI5 agent Jason (Andrew Koji).
Barton hinted at future developments for Black Doves season 2, a sequel that’s been verified, after the intense gun battle which resulted in the deaths of formidable gangster Alex (portrayed by Tracey Ullman) and her child.
He further commented, “Ultimately, it’s about the results of his decisions, not just in terms of moral responsibility but also practical consequences.” In this case, Sam taking such a drastic step by killing Alex and her son, and bearing the weight of those actions, is what we’re referring to.
Clearly, during the flashbacks, it’s revealed that Helen gave up her opportunity to escape in order to aid Sam. This selfless act instills a sense of moral duty within Sam, causing him to act similarly. Essentially, their bond of friendship is profound and demonstrates the depth of their affection for each other, as they are willing to make significant sacrifices for one another.
