Black Knight: Eternals 2 Should Just Pull From Arthurian Legend

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but be excited about the potential of a Black Knight series within the MCU. The lack of news regarding an Eternals sequel doesn’t dampen my spirits, as I believe that Marvel Studios has a golden opportunity to explore the rich history and complexities of Dane Whitman’s character.

Currently, Marvel Studios isn’t working on a follow-up to “Eternals” right now. According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, there won’t be an “Eternals 2” anytime soon. But this gives Marvel Studios the opportunity to explore more stories featuring Kit Harington’s underutilized character from the first film – Dane Whitman.

Marvel Studios has a knack for mixing things up: they’ve tackled various genres, such as World War II in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” horror with “Werewolf by Night,” and comedy in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” However, an Arthurian-style medieval tale is yet to be explored by the studio. This could present an opportunity for Dane Whitman, a Marvel character more commonly known as the Black Knight, to shine.

Black Knight is a title with a rich history in Marvel Comics, having been wielded by various characters over the years. Prior to Daredevil’s friend, Buck Barnes (Whitman), there was his uncle Nathan Garrett who held the mantle. Before Garrett, yet another Black Knight existed. The lineage can be traced back even further to Sir Percival, a trusted advisor of King Arthur and sworn adversary of Mordred.

Creating a Black Knight saga for Disney+ would offer filmmakers the opportunity to expand the narrative across various timeframes. This would allow for an in-depth exploration of both the Whitman bloodline and the enchanted Ebony Blade, hinted at in the post-credits scene of Eternals.

Will Black Knight return?

Nate Moore, a producer at Marvel, had hinted before that Dane Whitman’s role in the MCU might be extensive. Therefore, there is a chance that Whitman may make another appearance in the future.

In an interview on the set of “Eternals” in 2020, Kevin Feige described the Black Knight character as intriguing because he is a regular person who deals with the burden of his heritage, yet remains relatable. Actors like Kit Harington were considered for this role due to their ability to bring humanity to complex characters, such as Jon Snow. Harington also showcased great comedic skills in projects like the tennis mockumentary on HBO. The production team discovered that Harington has excellent comic timing and a unique charm, which they believed would add depth to the character. However, Black Knight is known for being a tragic figure, so having an actor who can portray both the light and dark aspects of this character was essential.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney+.
