Recently, it appeared as though Netflix had a strong commitment towards interactive television. However, it seems clear that this era has come to a close for them.
Starting from next Monday, May 12th, it appears that the popular streamer is permanently removing two of its most interactive titles, namely “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend,” from its library.
In 2018 and 2020, two unique offerings made their appearance on the platform. Initially, they were celebrated for their innovative structures, offering audiences an opportunity to engage in interactive storytelling akin to choose-your-own-adventure tales.
In the year 2019, Netflix’s Vice President of Product, Todd Yellin, expressed that Netflix was merely scratching the surface when it came to interactive storytelling. He emphasized their intention to invest further in this area, stating that “we are committed to increasing our investment” and that “we are fully committed to this.
However, only a few short years have passed, and this streamer has since abandoned that strategy completely. The cancellation of these two programs follows the previous removal of all their interactive titles.
The change aligns with a refreshed emphasis on mobile and cloud-based gaming for the broadcaster. Previously, it was indicated to The Verge that “the technology had fulfilled its role, but is becoming restrictive as we redirect our technological endeavors towards other sectors.
Fans might find it unexpected that Bandersnatch is being taken away, considering its recent significant mention in Black Mirror season 7’s episode Playtest, where Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry temporarily reprised their characters from the interactive episode.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must admit that I don’t have clear information about its availability beyond Netflix at this moment. Given the unique interactive technology used by Netflix for this episode, it seems rather improbable that we might see it in another format anytime soon.
