Black Mirror Season 7 Confirms the Return of One of Its Greatest Storylines With New Photo

This year, anticipate the arrival of another season of the Netflix anthology series “Black Mirror,” which will feature a continuation of one of its most acclaimed tales, “USS Callister.” Earlier this spring, it was announced that a sequel episode would be produced, marking a first for the series. Now, the official Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter account has shared a trailer showcasing what’s to come in 2021 – including a sneak peek at Cristin Milioti reprising her role as Nanette Cole.

In a video now taken down, there was a quick glimpse of Nanette, played by Milioti, in the control room of the USS Callister, adorned with armor displaying the ship’s emblem on its chest piece. This sneak peek implies that Milioti will indeed be reprising her role, and it has already been announced that Jimmi Simpson (as James Walton) and Billy Magnussen (as Valdack) will also return.

So far, no further information about the sequel to “USS Callister” from Season 7 has been disclosed. Yet, the original episode from Season 4, often hailed as one of the finest in Black Mirror, is a must-watch. In this story, we meet Robert Daly (played by Jesse Plemons), a game developer harboring resentment towards his colleagues. He employs their DNA to create sentient digital duplicates, subjecting them to his control in a Star Trek-inspired virtual world. However, when a new employee (Milioti) joins the game, she inspires the other characters to rise against him.

The “USS Callister” Sequel Will Be Black Mirror’s First

In a groundbreaking move, the upcoming episode is set to be the first instance where “Black Mirror” explores a sequel to one of its past episodes. Last year, series creator Charlie Brooker hinted at this possibility, expressing that they’ve been contemplating it for quite some time due to the episode’s concluding events.

He expressed, “This idea has been simmering or in the works for quite some time.” He went on to explain, “Part of the reason is that the ending leaves room for continuation, making it intriguing to explore where these characters could go next. It’s something we’ve considered off and on for several years, experimenting with different iterations and versions. However, coordinating schedules proved challenging, and then came the pandemic which seemed to put a halt to our plans. But I was thrilled when it finally came together. So, it’s been a while. And writing these characters is an opportunity I haven’t had before on Black Mirror, as they survive beyond one episode! It’s been enjoyable, and seeing them all on set has been fantastic.

What Could the USS Callister’s New Adventure Entail?

Although specifics about the upcoming sequel episode’s plot remain undisclosed, the depiction of Milioti’s character Nanette wearing armor may offer hints as to where the story will progress. As previously mentioned, Nanette is shown adorned in armor. Considering that many episodes of Black Mirror delve into dystopian or darker themes, it wouldn’t be surprising if the sequel episode portrayed the heroine of “USS Callister” transforming into an antagonist herself.

Black Mirror Season 7 is expected on Netflix sometime this year.
