Black Mirror season 7 will be more like “OG” series – with “bleakest” episode yet

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that Black Mirror has always been a captivating and thought-provoking journey through the realms of technology and human nature. The show’s evolution from Channel 4 to Netflix has been nothing short of fascinating, with its innovative storytelling and daring experimentation constantly pushing the boundaries of what we consider possible in television.

The science fiction anthology series “Black Mirror” is all about fresh starts. Each episode presents a unique tale, and the show itself has undergone multiple transformations over time.

Initially airing for two seasons and an additional spin-off on Channel 4, this show later shifted to Netflix, where it’s been producing new content. Notable recent innovations include the interactive “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” episode and the recently released sixth season, which includes several episodes that delve into the past. One of these, titled “Demon 79,” falls under the category of Red Mirror and does not revolve around technology in any way.

As the seventh season approaches, Brooker hints that the fresh episodes will lead us to uncharted territories, yet they’ll retain a sense of the original “Black Mirror” feel.

As I chat with Deadline, I share excitedly, “We’re venturing into uncharted territories with this new season. Fans can brace themselves for a rollercoaster ride of raw emotions and, if we do our job right, an exhilarating blend of suspense and fear. Remember the spine-tingling tales from Season 6, those Red Mirror episodes? Well, this time around, each episode feels like the original Black Mirror at its best.”

“I composed a single script that many found to be one of the darkest, most impactful blows yet. Additionally, there are technical episodes and those that leave people in tears. I hope it provides a complete emotional experience, but time will tell. Ultimately, the audience will decide.”

Based on Black Mirror’s history of exploring dark and thought-provoking themes, it’s safe to say that the announcement of an episode deemed the “darkest” yet has undoubtedly sparked excitement and curiosity among its audience.

In an exciting twist, the upcoming seventh season is guaranteed to shatter at least one series barrier since it’s introducing a sequel for the very first time. This sequel will pick up where Season 4’s USS Callister episode left off.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter recently, Brooker revealed why he decided to create the sequel, stating, “The idea has been simmering for quite some time now. Partly due to the series finale, which left things open-ended.”

“The initial plot leaves room for continuation, inviting the reader to explore further. Thus, it has always sparked curiosity: ‘Perhaps I’ll delve into that.’ This topic had been under consideration for an extended period.”

“We’ve had numerous changes and ideas we debated over for quite some time. However, coordinating schedules proved challenging, and eventually, the pandemic disrupted our plans.”

When asked if Plemons might reprise his role as Robert Daly following the death of his character in USS Callister, Brooker playfully hinted: “We’ll find out.”
