Black Mirror Star Reveals How He Teamed Up with Peter Capaldi for a Disturbing Role

*Warning – contains mild spoilers for Black Mirror: Plaything*

Fans are eagerly awaiting the fourth episode of Black Mirror’s seventh season, titled “Plaything,” since it marks the arrival of Peter Capaldi within Charlie Brooker’s creative realm.

In this rephrased version, we find that Capaldi acts alongside Lewis Gribben, portraying the roles of both an older and younger iteration of the same character, Cameron – a character marked by anxiety, who embarks on an adventure upon unearthing a novel ‘video game’ named Thronglets.

In conversation with Peter, we collaborated with director David Slade. Essentially, I suggested that he should portray an older version of myself, which is how we ultimately approached the role. This was a joint effort, as he asked me about my voice to ensure accuracy.

Instead of texts or emails, I’d send him voice messages. During our overlapping scenes, I would lead the way so he could copy my actions. This was primarily for his benefit, as we were aware that both of us would portray the character differently in parallel scenes.

Gribben went on saying, “It seems like young Cameron is quite fearful. He carries a significant amount of fear and apprehension. In fact, he appears to be quite afraid of people in general.

In Peter’s depiction, as he grows older, he possesses a clear sense of purpose. He retains his peculiarities and timidity, yet these traits serve a specific function. There’s a definite path guiding them.

We were aware of where both characters stood at that point in time, and primarily, it was him who took from me, not the other way around. I didn’t take anything from him! To be clear, I was joking about being lazy. In truth, while filming, I would attempt to erase his actions from my mind so I could concentrate on portraying the ’90s version of him authentically.

Moreover, in Plaything, you’ll find Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, who may be familiar to Black Mirror fans – they are returning to their characters, Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur, from the interactive tale Bandersnatch.

In addition to them, other recurring characters appear in this season of Black Mirror. Also, there is a follow-up episode, titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” which continues the storylines initiated in the premiere episode of season 4.

In other words, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, and others will be returning for the upcoming episodes, but we can also expect to see fresh faces like Chris O’Dowd, Issa Rae, and Paul Giamatti joining the cast.
