Black Myth Wukong physical release: Why are there no discs?

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of gaming consoles from their humble beginnings to the sophisticated machines they are today, I find myself torn between nostalgia and acceptance when it comes to Black Myth Wukong’s digital-only release.

As we were nearing the seventh generation of gaming consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii), it felt as though a future sans physical media was just around the corner, and I found myself embracing this digital shift in the gaming world.

With the ubiquity of online gaming, for how much longer would we cling to our precious shiny discs?

Even after nearly two decades, gamers remain eager to purchase the newest titles in their physical form. Yet, it seems that the upcoming game Black Myth Wukong will not offer a physical version for sale.

Does this mean it never will? Are we finally moving into the dystopia of digital-only releases?

Let’s take a closer look at Wukong’s upcoming release, and whether or not we’re overreacting here…

Black Myth Wukong physical release: Why are there no discs?

Instead of a traditional “disc,” the physical version of Black Myth Wukong comes with a distinctive code inside its case. You can use this code to download and access the game digitally online.

In essence, what you’re getting is essentially a digital copy of the game, which will remain yours. However, you might also find yourself with an extra, empty box as well.

So, why is this? Well, the developers at Game Science shared their reasons via blog post:

For the first time, Game Science is globally launching a console game, but we’re encountering challenges in supplying offline resources needed for import, export, transportation, distribution, and sales of physical discs. This has made it hard for us to make the physical discs available at the same time as the official game release.

“The publishing crew is currently tackling these problems and investigating possibilities for providing actual CDs as an option.”

It seems that, for now, I’m just dealing with a short-term hiccup. Perhaps, down the line, I might get my hands on a physical copy of Black Myth Wukong.

Fear not, we’re still a culture that respects the disc!
