As a seasoned gamer and follower of indie game development, I must express my admiration for Feng Ji, the visionary founder and CEO of Game Science, the studio behind the critically acclaimed “Black Myth: Wukong.” His recent heartfelt post on Weibo, acknowledging the game’s success at the 2024 Steam Awards while also expressing his challenges in adapting it for the Xbox Series X/S, resonates deeply with me.
Having witnessed the journey of numerous independent studios, I can empathize with Feng Ji’s struggle to optimize “Black Myth: Wukong” for a console that has limitations compared to its competitors in terms of hardware resources. It is a testament to his dedication and commitment to delivering the best gaming experience possible.
I eagerly await the day when I can finally play “Black Myth: Wukong” on my Xbox Series X/S, but until then, I will continue to support Feng Ji’s team and marvel at their impressive achievements. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll get a joke from Feng Ji about how his team is still working on optimizing the game for the Xbox, and it’s taking them “several years of optimization experience” just to squeeze into those 10GB!
The head honcho at Game Science, the studio behind “Black Myth: Wukong”, Feng Ji, recently opened up on a popular Chinese social media site, Weibo, about the challenges they encountered while bringing “Black Myth: Wukong” to the Xbox Series X/S.
During the 2024 Steam Awards, where Black Myth: Wukong bagged several accolades, including Game of the Year, Feng Ji expressed gratitude to the game’s enthusiasts for their unwavering backing.
Despite not experiencing a major mishap, Feng Ji let out a small sigh after securing all the victories,” he said in simpler terms. “Your fighting prowess was so intense that you seemed to be lacking an XBOX gaming robe… It feels somewhat odd (but the 10G shared memory, I can’t grasp it without several years of fine-tuning experience).
Hey there! In my excitement as a fan, I wanted to highlight something interesting from Feng Ji’s post: he mentioned that the Xbox Series S has a combined memory pool of 10GB, which is shared between its CPU and GPU. Since games for Xbox Series X/S need to be identical across both consoles according to Microsoft, developers frequently face challenges due to the relatively lower hardware specifications of the Xbox Series S compared to the Series X and PS5.
The action-packed game, Black Myth: Wukong, has yet to arrive on Xbox Series X/S. As of now, it’s playable only on PC and PlayStation 5. Previously, in December, the game received an update enabling it to leverage the enhanced capabilities of the PS5 Pro hardware.
According to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Black Myth: Wukong was rated for release on Xbox Series X/S as far back as October. However, the developers have yet to confirm if the game will indeed be coming to Xbox in the future.
