Black Ops 6 Season 2 Crashes PCs: Is Ricochet to Blame?

With a touch of humor, many pondered over what aspects of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 2 update might malfunction. However, in reality, the update seems to have caused problems for quite a few players on PC.

Completely and utterly broken.

As per the official updates from the Call of Duty account on platform X, a problem has been identified with the latest Zombies map, The Tomb, for those using AMD hardware. However, for some players like us, this issue seems to be more severe.

🔍 We’re looking into a rise in crashes during the Zombies game among players using AMD graphics cards. Here’s the link to the report: [link] (https://t.co/rHvqVwi72U), published on January 28, 2025.

It appears that my computer, as well as several others, is experiencing frequent Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crashes, not only in Zombies but also in multiplayer and Warzone. The system fails to launch a game before it crashes. I’m unable to run the benchmark or utilize the firing range without the PC crashing. Even exiting the Call of Duty launcher triggers a crash. However, they do have an enticing new battle pass up for sale!

I’ve been exchanging messages with several people on social media who find themselves in a similar situation, and we’ve discovered that the problem isn’t specific to AMD. Some are using NVIDIA, while I am using Intel Arc. My computer suggested that my graphics card overclock was causing the issue, but it occurs even when it’s set at its default settings.

One user who encountered an issue found it helpful to report an UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP error during a crash. Observe that the term ‘kernel’ is involved, and what was updated for today’s major Season 2 release? The update was Ricochet.

Another helpful X user, KexTheHusky, immediately made the light bulb turn on.

It seems to me that uncovering details about this incident might resemble the CrowdStrike case, as it could potentially involve Ricochet due to the stop code’s reference to the kernel, given that Ricochet operates at a kernel level. I suspect there may have been an update to Ricochet on January 28, 2025, which might be relevant to our investigation.

It’s important to note that this isn’t an officially confirmed problem. No one has publicly admitted that the game is experiencing blue screens, and neither Intel nor NVIDIA have acknowledged being involved. However, given that both CPU manufacturers are present in the systems where this issue seems to be occurring, it appears that all possibilities are affected.

Isn’t it rather plausible, given the reference to kernels in an announcement for a significant upgrade of the Ricochet kernel-level anti-cheat system, that such an update might have contributed to PCs experiencing issues and malfunctions?
