Blade Cancelled? A Timeline of Marvel’s Most Delayed Movie

As a long-time Marvel fan with over three decades of comic book history under my belt, I must say that the rollercoaster ride that is the Blade reboot has been nothing short of a thrilling, yet tumultuous journey. The constant delays, director changes, and casting shakeups have left me on the edge of my seat, much like our titular vampire hunter finds himself in his battles against the undead.

It appears that the scheduled release of Marvel’s Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, may no longer be happening in 2025 as Disney has removed it from their schedule and replaced it with Predator: Badlands for November 7, 2025. Originally planned for November 3, 2023, then rescheduled to September 6, 2024, and again to February 14, 2025, the Blade reboot has been delayed multiple times, initially occupying a late 2025 release date after Disney shuffled their schedule last November. The shift in dates was due to the advancement of Deadpool & Wolverine from May to July 2024 and the delay of Thunderbolts from 2024 to 2025.

In a recent chat with BlackTreeTV, Marvel Studios President and producer Kevin Feige emphasized that over the past few years, their main focus when it comes to creating the new “Blade” film has been taking their time. They’re determined not to rush things, as they strive to produce the best possible version of this movie, given that there were some excellent “Blade” films in the past.

In simple terms, Kevin Feige confirmed that they are fully dedicated to making a new Blade movie and will not release it until it’s perfect. He acknowledged that the long wait has been challenging for both the team and some fans. Currently, a writer is working on the script. Wesley Snipes, who played Blade in the past, recently reappeared in Deadpool & Wolverine and emphasized that there’s only ever going to be one Blade. So far, Mahershala Ali’s voice-only appearance as Blade in Eternals (2021) has been the only exception.

2011 marked the day when Marvel took back control of the movie rights for Blade, a confirmation made by Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada at San Diego Comic-Con. Previously, these rights were licensed out to New Line Cinema and Lionsgate for the character Blade and The Punisher respectively.

2nd May 2013: Kevin Feige affirmed that Blade is part of Marvel Studios again. When Iron Man 3 kick-started Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Feige also announced that characters like Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil were now under Marvel’s wing.

20th July, 2019: Marvel Studios confirms that Mahershala Ali will star in a reboot of Blade, following their announcement of movies like The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Widow, Thor: Love and Thunder, and TV series such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye. This exciting revelation wrapped up Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation.

Feige revealed that the actor has been cast as the title character in Marvel’s new version of Blade. In a discussion following the panel, Feige told The Hollywood Reporter that after winning his second Oscar for Green Book, Ali contacted Marvel Studios. As Feige put it, “When Marhershala calls, you pick up.” During their conversation, Feige shared, Ali expressed his desire to play Blade.

2020, October 1st: Mahershala Ali discusses the development of Blade as a TV series on The Tight Rope podcast. Previously, in 2006, New Line attempted a Blade television show titled “Blade: The Series,” featuring Sticky Fingaz (Kirk “Sticky” Jones) in the lead role. This series, which continued the storyline of the trilogy, ran for only 13 episodes. On the day his Marvel series Luke Cage premiered on Netflix, Ali asked his agent about the status of Blade, as he had been hearing that they were trying to revive it. Excited about being part of the Marvel universe on TV, and with a desire to work in film, Ali mentioned that he aimed to skillfully navigate between both mediums.

In recollection, there was a prolonged discussion within the TV division of Marvel about reviving Blade as a television series, Ali reminisced. Since these discussions were taking place, I expressed my interest in being considered for the role because I had a personal attachment to Wesley Snipes’ portrayal from my teenage years… I simply voiced my desire to embody that character and handle the challenge it presents.

2021 marked the initial delay of the filming start date for Blade, which was originally scheduled for May 5th but moved to July 2022. According to THR, this adjustment allowed more time for script development by Osei-Kuffour.
