The ongoing reboot of Marvel Studios’ movie “Blade” seems to be facing constant obstacles, particularly in maintaining a director. As reported by Jeff Sneider from The InSneider, filmmaker Cary Fukunaga has quietly departed the project, becoming the most recent director to step away from leading the Marvel vampire action film.
In other words, he’s now the third notable filmmaker to depart from this production, joining a list that already includes Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange.

Fukunaga, renowned for his work on “No Time to Die” and the highly praised first season of “True Detective”, is said to have departed due to disagreements about creative direction. As is common with Marvel, they are reportedly seeking a director who aligns more closely with the studio’s preferences – a term that often implies a readiness to adhere to Kevin Feige’s stringent production guidelines.
The continuous changing of directors has made Blade one of Marvel’s most notoriously troubled film projects. Regardless of numerous script revisions and extended production waits, Marvel chief Kevin Feige continues to express his determination to bring the Mahershala Ali-starring vampire action movie to life in public.
But with every new name attached—and quickly detached—the project seems less stable than ever.
Enter Chad Stahelski.

As a die-hard fan, it’s exhilarating to learn that the creative genius behind John Wick, renowned for his gritty action scenes and realistic stunt work, is rumored to be Marvel Studios’ top pick. Chad Stahelski, who began his career as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double in The Matrix, later moving into directing, has openly expressed a desire for Blade. During his 2023 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he boldly declared: “Out of all the projects out there, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to take a swing at Blade… That’s one that truly resonates with me.
David Leitch, known for his authenticity, distinct visual approach, and delivering budget-friendly, R-rated action films, is likely to bring that specific tone that Feige is said to be aiming for in the upcoming Blade movie. This project, with an estimated budget of $80 million and an R rating, has undergone script revisions from Michael Green (Logan) and Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok), following a series of other writers who couldn’t quite crack Feige’s creative code.

It’s uncertain at this point if Stahelski will indeed be involved, but Marvel enthusiasts should keep their excitement in check. If he does join, it’s important to note that the film doesn’t have a confirmed release date and is still far from being ready for production. In fact, last October, the movie was removed completely from the release schedule, indicating another postponement in a development process that’s been ongoing for almost five years now.
Originally, this high-profile Marvel venture featuring a two-time Academy Award winner seemed electrifying. However, it’s evolved into a lesson on creative stagnation instead. Can Kevin Feige and Marvel now put an end to the turmoil and revive Blade, or will this reboot remain entangled in development limbo for eternity?
