Blake Lively wishes she could say more.
At the 2025 TIME100 Gala, where she was recognized as an honoree, the actress from “Another Simple Favor” appeared to make a seldom public remark concerning her ongoing legal dispute with her co-star and director from “It Ends With Us“, Justin Baldoni.
Following his comment about being labeled “influential” carrying a “substantial obligation,” Blake delved into the potency of vocal expression for women.
In a statement at the April 24 event, as captured by Variety and shared on social media, the individual emphasized that “it’s not just about how we utilize something, but who and what we choose to support, what we choose to remain quiet about, and what we prioritize financially versus what truly aligns with our values, all matters greatly.
Last year, Blake (who has previously taken legal action against Justin for sexual harassment and retaliation) stated, “I have a great deal to share about the past two years of my life, but this isn’t the right place for it.” (Since her lawsuit, Justin – who denies her accusations – has counter-sued Blake, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist Leslie Sloan, asking for $400 million. All parties have denied the allegations.)
After appearing to allude to the controversy surrounding the film adaptation of “It Ends With Us,” which started filming in May 2023, the founder of Betty Buzz took the opportunity to honor her mother, Willie Elain McAlpin, who endured what Blake referred to as “the most heinous crime a man can commit against a woman.
For my entire life, I’ve seen my mother hide her unjustified embarrassment, so it’s incredibly significant for me to discuss this today as her daughter. If we acknowledge it, we can change it,” said the star of Gossip Girl, who attended the gala with her mother and Ryan. “My mom never received justice from a work colleague who tried to harm her when she was a mother of three young children, years before I was born.
Blake shared that her mother found the motivation to seize control of her life following a radio broadcast about a woman facing a similar situation as hers.
In my fervor, I can’t help but share this profound impact a radio broadcast had on my life. The actress mentioned how a woman’s heart-wrenching, vivid account of overcoming adversity resonated deeply with her – the very story that mirrored our own circumstances. She listened, not succumbing to fear and unjustified embarrassment like I might have, but instead choosing to act on the wisdom shared. Because of that woman’s courage, my mom is here with me today.
She went on to say, “The life I have now, the fact that I’m here with all of you, and being celebrated, is owed to a woman whose identity remains unknown to me. I am grateful for her existence, for it is because of her that I live. My mother is here as well, and she too is a testament to this unknown heroine. Not only did she survive, but she shared her story with others.
Blake ended her speech by celebrating the other strong women at the star-studded gala.
She asserted, “I’ve experienced the extraordinary power of women’s victory firsthand. I’ve felt it, interacted with it. Right now, in this very space, I see it. These are the triumphant conclusions we as women and girls should envision. We can survive, both physically and emotionally, and not only do we endure, but we flourish. Even when it seems impossible. Even when we’re suffering deeply. Never doubt a woman’s capacity to bear hardship.
