Bleach Creator Admits His Editors Never Interfered With the Manga

As a gamer who’s been through countless hours of anime-based adventures, I can confidently say that Tite Kubo, the mastermind behind Bleach, is a true manga maestro. With Ichigo Kurosaki gracing our screens for two long decades, this Soul Reaper has undeniably etched his mark on Shonen Jump’s hall of fame.

The artist behind “Bleach” understands the art of penning manga stories that resonate. For two decades, Ichigo Kurosaki has left an indelible impression on our world, transforming into a beloved symbol for Shonen Jump. Accompanied by a successful anime and a wealth of merchandise, there’s no arguing with the triumph of “Bleach”. In a recent conversation, creator Tite Kubo confessed that he always maintained control over the storyline, keeping his editors at arm’s length.

The information originated directly from Kubo, during a conversation between him and Sakuma, a well-known Japanese YouTuber. In this meeting, they delved into the topic of Bleach, a highly successful manga that has left an indelible mark on Shonen Jump. It was here where Kubo expressed that he only met with his editors when it was absolutely necessary.

He said that as a writer, he doesn’t typically collaborate with an editor in meetings. Furthermore, Kubo stated that he didn’t require much, if any, input from his editors to create Bleach. Unlike many manga creators who heavily depend on their editors for feedback and ideas, Bleach was unique because Kubo had a clear vision of the story from the beginning, and he approached the creation of the manga with that in mind.

As a creator, I used to complete my manuscripts and then hand them over to my editor for serialization. I’d always tell them, ‘I plan to release it next week in this manner,’ and they’d nod, taking the work back with them. When asked about the editorial team following my instructions, I admit that I didn’t really leave them much choice. It was more like I presented them with no other options.

Tite Kubo’s Vision for Bleach

Since the green light for Bleach was granted at Shonen Jump, Tite Kubo had a clear vision he wanted to bring to life, from characters like Rukia and Aizen to the Visored. As the artist, Kubo knew his destination. Therefore, when it came to working with his team, Kubo’s editors primarily copied manuscripts and organized meetings on his behalf.

As a die-hard manga enthusiast like myself, if you haven’t dived into the captivating world of “Bleach” yet, here’s an easy way to get started! The main series can be effortlessly found in Kubo’s original work and it’s readily available for reading on the Shonen Jump app. For a deeper dive into this fascinating universe, I highly recommend you check out its official synopsis below:

“Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn’t change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits and, along with Rukia–who is slowly regaining her powers–it’s Ichigo’s job to protect the innocent from Hollows and help the spirits themselves find peace.”
