As a long-time fan of Bleach and a connoisseur of behind-the-scenes stories, I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for Tite Kubo’s resilience and determination. His account of his early days at Weekly Shonen Jump is a testament to the grit and perseverance required to make it in the world of manga.
In October this year, the Soul Society will clash with the Sternritter once more as Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 makes its comeback on television screens. Studio Pierrot has enlisted the guidance and feedback of the franchise’s creator, Tite Kubo, for this anime adaptation. In parts two and three, fans saw that Kubo was eager to create fresh scenes and battles not found in the original manga. Recently, Kubo shared insights from his early days at Weekly Shonen Jump, discussing what posed the greatest challenge when crafting Ichigo Kurosaki’s story.
During a recent interview, Kubo expressed the grueling timeline involved in creating a successful manga for Weekly Shonen Jump, stating, “The hardest aspect was undoubtedly the initial deadline for our first serialization meeting. When they chose to serialize my work, there was this gathering called the serialization meeting. I had to submit my work from my home in Hiroshima. After it was reviewed, I received confirmation that it was accepted. However, I wasn’t fully prepared at that point. The project was still in progress, and Bleach wasn’t properly established yet.”
The Harsher Side of Shonen Jump
As a budding mangaka, I vividly remember a past chat with the big boss at Shonen Jump. He wasn’t keen on an idea I pitched during our serialization meeting and bluntly said, “No way. Get him in here!” It’s astonishing how he took the time to pull a newbie like me aside. When I was summoned, he laid it on thick, saying, “This isn’t up to par. I expect you to craft a masterpiece for Jump!” His words stung, and I found myself in a funk, temporarily abandoning my writing. I was green behind the ears, and it took me roughly a year to get back on track. During that period, my editor informed me that the serialization meeting demanded three initial episodes. The challenge was to churn out all three and present them, but he advised me to reveal just one episode at a time to prove I was still grinding away.
