Bleach Finally Unleashes Nanao’s Secret Zanpakuto (& It’s Powerful)

As a die-hard Bleach fan who grew up with the series and even attended Soul Society Academy in my dreams (okay, maybe not that last part), I must say that Nanao Ise’s Zanpakuto reveal in the Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 has been nothing short of breathtaking. The fight between Shunsui Kyoraku and Lillie Barro was already epic, but when Nanao stepped into the fray with her hidden Zanpakuto, Shinken Hakkyoken, it took the excitement to a whole new level.

In the coming season this Fall, Part 3 of the anime adaptation of “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War” is approaching its conclusion. The latest episode featured one of the most exhilarating battles yet, as Nanao Ise revealed her concealed Zanpakuto after all these years. The battle scenes in “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 – The Struggle” have been intense, with the remaining Soul Reapers going up against Yhwach’s most powerful Sternritter. Each fight has surpassed expectations, and the clash between Shunsui Kyoraku and Lillie Barro stands out as particularly thrilling due to Barro’s transformation into a powerful new form.

Kyoraku has been matching this formidable adversary, and it appeared he might finish off Barro by fully releasing his Bankai for the first time in the anime. However, Barro managed to escape the Bankai’s effect and recuperate from the harm inflicted. In such a situation, Nanao stepped up, utilizing a Zanpakuto called Shinken Hakkyoken that Kyoraku had concealed from the Ise clan at the request of Nanao’s mother, to finally conclude the battle herself.

Nanao Unleashes Her Zanpakuto At Last

In episode 37 of “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War”, it appears that Captain Kyoraku has successfully trapped Barro with his Bankai, leading viewers to believe that the Quincy has been defeated and will be swept away by the ocean encircling them. However, it swiftly becomes apparent that not only is Barro unharmed, but he has transformed into an even more terrifying and formidable creature, piercing Kyoraku’s abdomen with ease. With limited options available, Kyoraku turns to Nanao for assistance. In a surprising revelation, he discloses that he has kept her Zanpakuto hidden from her all this time.

It’s revealed that Nanao assumed she didn’t have a Zanpakuto at birth, so she honed her Kido skills to join the Court Guard Squads. However, upon becoming a Soul Reaper, she was assigned to Kyoraku’s squad. As he had vowed to Nanao’s mother, Kyoraku kept Nanao’s Zanpakuto hidden, believing it to be a curse for women in the Ise clan. The Ise family were renowned priestesses, and Kyoraku became connected with them through his older brother marrying Nanao’s mother who later passed away.

How Strong Is Nanao’s Zanpakuto?

It’s uncovered that part of the pledge involved concealing Nanao’s Zanpakuto from her and safeguarding her, and surprisingly, this weapon has been in plain sight all along. Kyoraku had secreted this blade, Shinken Hakkyoken, within his own Kyokotsu. As he hands over the sword to Nanao, Kyoraku cautions that accepting it will also burden her with her family’s curse. However, Nanao is resolute about using it despite the warning, and it proves to be an ideal tool against Barro’s assaults.

Shinken Hakkyoken is a sword-like object without an edge, instead adorned with numerous mirrors. It has the ability to reflect anything thrown at it and possesses enough strength to counterattack Barro with his own attack, effectively ending the Quincy’s reign forever. Despite suffering injuries during the battle, Kyoraku and Nanao stood by each other, with Nanao utilizing her Zanpakuto for the first time in the anime, ultimately delivering the decisive blow together.
