Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Makes a Major Change to Nell

As a long-time fan of the Bleach series and someone who has followed its twists and turns since its inception, I must say that the introduction of Nelliel into the fray has been nothing short of exhilarating! It’s not every day you get to witness a former “frenemy” switch sides and become an ally. The arrival of Grimmjow only adds fuel to the fire, making this Blood War all the more intriguing.

Among the numerous Arrancar I’ve encountered in my Bleach gaming world, Nelliel has always been one of my favorites. Though I’ve battled against Grimmjow and other Espada in the past, it seems an unusual alliance between the Arrancar and the Soul Society has formed under a common enemy. Now, as the Wandenreich have amassed their power, Yhwach has absorbed the might of the Soul King, leaving the Shinigami in a tight spot. Fortunately, Nel and Grimmjow have shown up just in time to lend a hand to Ichigo Kurosaki. It looks like Nel’s got a nifty new trick hidden up her sleeve, which should come in handy for our upcoming battles!

Ever since Nell made her debut in the supernatural shonen series, she’s been more of a complex ally than an adversary to Ichigo Kurosaki – you could say we fans refer to this relationship as a “complicated friendship”. The Arrancar initially had issues with the Soul Society, making life difficult for the Shinigami. However, unlike her fellow Arrancar, Nelliel developed feelings for Ichigo and didn’t engage in hostilities against him like other Soul Reapers.

Nelliel’s New Ability Explained

Previously, Nelieel had faced challenges with a specific aspect of her supernatural identity, as she often transformed from an adult figure into a childlike one. Following collaboration with Urahara, however, Nel now possesses a technological device (a bracelet) that grants her the freedom to transition between her two forms whenever desired. During a hearty reunion with Ichigo, Nel humorously hinted at the possibility of never reverting back to her diminutive form and instead maintaining her adult figure indefinitely.

Indeed, it’s true that not everyone is thrilled about the Ichigo and Nel reunion. Grimmjow finds himself disappointed at missing out on a rematch with his long-time adversary, the substitute Soul Reaper, while Orihime can’t help but feel a touch of envy as Nel gets close to Kurosaki. However, regardless of personal feelings, the Soul Society benefits from having the Arrancar join their ranks in the Blood War, making it stronger overall.

The Blood War Continues

With the Soul Society’s forces mobilized and the Arrancar ready beside them, their prospects against Yhwach and the Wandenreich seem bleak at most. The commander of the Sternritter has amassed the entire power of the Soul King, granting Yhwach the ability to foresee events before they occur. Moreover, this newfound power places him on a par with divinity. It’s no wonder that the Quincies are holding their ground in this massive conflict, which undeniably ranks among the top shows of the fall 2024 anime season.

At this point in time, we are more than halfway through the Blood War’s events, as Bleach has confirmed that this series will be four seasons long. It will be interesting to see if the fourth and final part will arrive next year in 2025, and whether or not this will be the final journey for the Soul Society on the screen. The Thousand-Year Blood War was initially the final arc for the shonen series though creator Tite Kubo did return to create a brand new chapter in Bleach: No Breathes From Hell. As of the writing of this article, Kubo has not confirmed if he will create new stories from the Soul Society though the Blood War has certainly had fans wanting more Bleach.
