Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Released Its Strangest Episode To Date (And Its Glorious)

As a long-time aficionado of anime, I must admit that the thirty-fourth episode of Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War, titled “Baby, Hold Your Hand,” has left me utterly spellbound. The episode, which deviates from the usual focus on Ichigo and Ywhach, offers a refreshing twist that has always been one of the show’s strengths – its ability to surprise and delight viewers with the bizarre and the extraordinary.

In a somewhat unusual twist for the annals of anime, the thirty-fourth episode of “Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War,” titled “Baby, Hold Your Hand,” veered away from the anticipated confrontation between Ichigo and Ywhach in the Soul Society. Instead, it zeroed in on two Shinigami characters, Mayuri and Kenpachi, battling one of the strongest Wandenreich members. The peculiarity of this episode is such that it has contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of “Bleach.” With its latest airing, now is an opportune moment to delve into what makes “Baby, Hold Your Hand” a groundbreaking departure from the Blood War formula.

heads up: if you haven’t watched episode 34 of Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War yet, you should know that we’re about to delve into some major spoiler territory. In this episode, Mad Scientist Mayuri Kurotsuchi faces off against a character who is even more peculiar than the usual Soul Society Shinigami – Pernida Parnkgjas from the Wandenreich. Unlike other Bleach characters, he’s noticeably shorter and his true identity was quite unexpected when revealed. Up until now, viewers had only seen him with his face covered under a cloak, so it was quite shocking to finally catch a glimpse of his real appearance.

The Left Hand of The Soul King

In the most recent Blood War episode, it’s unveiled that Pernida is actually a colossal arm, with Mayuri proposing that this Sternritter lieutenant serves as the left hand of the Soul King. Earlier in the season, fans watched Ukitake selflessly give up his life to assume the role of the right-hand of the Soul King. Regrettably, even this sacrifice couldn’t halt Yhwach from seizing the power of the Shinigami’s sovereign. With Yhwach now wielding the power of the Soul King, beings such as Pernida possess a significant edge.

During my first encounter with Kenpachī, Pernida, I showcased my raw power by forcing Kenpachī to amputate one of his arms. Unphased by the loss of a limb, Kenpachī pressed on, determined to slice through “The Left Hand” before taking another hit. Fortunately for Kenpachī, at the most opportune moment, Mayuri impaled him right through the chest, rendering him immobile and effectively stopping Pernida’s abilities in their tracks.

Mayuri’s Bankai Is The Most Terrifying Thing Ever

It’s hard to accept the power of Mayuri’s latest Bankai unless you witness it firsthand. While his previous ability was unsettling, calling forth a giant, poison-spewing baby creature, the upgraded version is much more frightening. Known as “Matai Fukuin Shotai”, the transformed baby Bankai produces a smaller baby that has “seventy thousand exposed nerves”. This unique biological structure makes the Bankai virtually indestructible against Pernida’s attacks, and the battle appears to conclude with Matai consuming the Left Hand of the Soul King.

In the annals of Bleach, Mayuri stands out remarkably, often appearing more antagonistic than protagonistic, although some debate exists about her true nature as a Shinigami being inherently malevolent. In this particular episode, Mayuri deployed bombs that appeared to be sentient and vocal organisms, possibly former members of the Soul Society. This latest Bleach encounter underscores the unique nature of Tite Kubo’s series compared to others in Shonen Jump, and we eagerly anticipate a successful resolution as the Blood War nears its conclusion.
