Bleach's Anime Is Overdue for a Remake

As a long-time fan who has been following Bleach since its early days, I can confidently say that it’s high time for a full remake of this beloved series. The Thousand-Year Blood War arc is showcasing what Bleach could be at its best, and it’s a tantalizing taste of what we could see if the entire series were given this treatment.

20 years have passed since the premiere of “Bleach” anime, and it’s long overdue for a complete remake. The anime is currently airing new episodes this Fall as it embarks on the third wave of episodes covering Tite Kubo’s original manga’s Thousand-Year Blood War arc. A project that fans have been yearning to see come true for more than a decade is now not only alive, but already halfway through its intended episode run. Why stop there? Let’s keep dreaming and strive for even greater heights!

The latest installment, titled “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War,” demonstrates the potential of the franchise at its best. The original anime series ended prematurely years ago, leaving us eager for a fitting conclusion. This fall, we’re finally getting new episodes to tie up loose ends, and it’s an opportunity for fans to witness a full adaptation of “Bleach” with contemporary talent and technology. It’s been exciting to watch, and revisiting the series from the start in this fresh style could make it even more enjoyable.

Why Remake the Bleach Anime?

In a way that long-time fans of the initial Bleach anime anticipated from the series two decades ago, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War offers an impressive visual presentation. The quality is at such a high level that we could barely imagine it back then, and it’s enhancing Tite Kubo’s original artwork even further. It feels as though the Bleach manga was actually ahead of its time in this aspect, since the anime never quite managed to embody the essence of that original comic perfectly. However, now we can finally witness such an accurate representation. Additionally, Shueisha’s recent promotional material strengthens this argument.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Bleach anime, Shueisha released a special promo that reimagines some iconic scenes from the series using the style seen in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Although it’s just a short video, it offers a tantalizing glimpse of the heights the Bleach anime could reach if ever remade. Merely the prospect of watching these key story arcs once more in a fresh format would be exciting.

Combine this with the knowledge that Bleach has already concluded its storyline, and the idea of a remake becomes even more intriguing. One of the main criticisms of the original series in the 2000s was the need for the Bleach team to create additional content and material to extend Kubo’s manga, which often resulted in deviations from the main storyline. While some of these detours led to impressive outcomes, most did not. A remake would give a new Bleach anime the opportunity to focus on the strong points and present them on a consistent, seasonal basis, similar to what we’ve seen with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.

The only potential drawback of a full Bleach remake anime would be the time spent on other projects. If there’s a team dedicated to redoing the Bleach anime in a new way, then that team can’t use that time on a potential next hit. It’s the question of whether or not something like Bleach is not only “worthy” of a remake, but “worthy” of the time that could have been spent working on what could be the next thing. It’s an icon of the past not stepping down for the new generation, but at the same time, it’s also becoming highly relevant once more. So capitalize on that.

How to Remake Bleach

A solution to address some of these issues could be by adopting a seasonal production schedule. This way, the new Bleach team can work through an ongoing storyline annually, leaving gaps for rest and exploration of other projects. In today’s world, where old becomes new again, franchises such as Naruto, One Piece, and Dragon Ball are thriving with their milestone anniversaries, demonstrating that they still hold the same industry-dominating power they once did.

This upcoming “Bleach” anime offers an excellent opportunity for fresh fans to join the franchise, as it serves as an ideal way to delve into the entire series and get up-to-date. With a seasonal release schedule, this new anime will eventually be prepared to tackle the latest storyline in the series. Not too long ago, Kubo resumed work on the series with a new one-shot set after the manga’s conclusion, hinting at a brand new arc involving Ichigo and his companions battling warriors who have descended into Hell. If the current “Bleach” anime concludes its run, it could potentially lead straight into this new arc.

Given that a fresh live-action adaptation appears to be underway, this could be the perfect moment for another chance with “Bleach”. Nowadays, remakes are increasingly prevalent, and it seems even “One Piece” is joining the trend. Why miss out on “Bleach”, then?
