As an old-school gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Double Eleven’s latest offering, Blindfire, has piqued my interest like never before. The concept of an arena shooter played entirely in the dark is not just innovative, but it also harks back to the days when we relied on our wits and keen ears instead of flashy graphics to survive.
On the recent Xbox partner showcase, Double Eleven unveiled their latest game, a unique arena first-person shooter that’s played entirely in the dark. The game, titled Blindfire, is now available for preview and early access on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. It will also be released on PS5 later this year. You can watch the first in-engine trailer below.
The idea is simple: In this game, each competitor carries a weapon, yet the playing field is pitch-black. Due to the darkness, they must rely on listening to their opponents and spotting light signals such as muzzle flashes when weapons are discharged. However, returning fire could potentially reveal your location.
In this game, friendly fire is possible, so it’s crucial to be aware of it. Additionally, you need to consider environmental elements such as traps, spotlights, and even searchlights that deceased players can manipulate. To help navigate your surroundings, you have Echo, which provides an audio overview, and Last Known Position, a feature that shows the recent movements of opponents when scanning them.
As a gamer, diving into the heart of this game, I find myself drawn to the thrilling core mode called Bodycount. This mode can be enjoyed in both Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch settings. It’s structured over five intense rounds, where each player gets one life. Instead of focusing on who wins, the goal is to score points by landing headshots, achieving killstreaks, or miraculously surviving unscathed. Currently, there are only two weapons at our disposal – the Mantis pistol and Abolition shotgun – but we can expect more firepower in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on its development in the upcoming months!
