Blue Exorcist Creator Addresses the Illness That Led to a Hiatus

As a die-hard fan of Blue Exorcist since its inception back in 2009, I have witnessed the dark fantasy world of Rin and Yukio Okumura evolve over the years, and it is truly heartwarming to see their journey continue even after all these years. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, with hiatuses here and there, but Kazue Kato’s recent confession about her health issues has added another layer of depth to this incredible story.

Hard to imagine, but this year marks the 15th anniversary of “Blue Exorcist,” a captivating dark fantasy series. Back in 2009, its creator, Kazue Kato, unveiled it to us, and ever since, Jump Square magazine has been closely following its narrative journey. Naturally, there have been some hurdles along the way, such as temporary pauses. Just recently, “Blue Exorcist” announced another hiatus ending in November, and Kazue Kato is now discussing the health issue that led to these recent breaks.

X made a confession through Twitter when they posted a detailed handwritten message to their fans. In this statement, the artist revealed why they had kept quiet about their health up until now. After accepting and understanding their condition, X is now prepared to explain the reasons behind their work breaks, and they want their fans to know that their situation is not life-threatening. On a positive note, the artist is on the road to recovery, although the journey has been challenging.

The Reason Behind Blue Exorcist’s Recent Hiatus

Moving forward, Kazue revealed that her health problem emerged in March 2024 following a regular doctor’s appointment where an underlying illness was discovered. In the ensuing months, she’s had to make frequent hospital trips while simultaneously working on her manga. She recently underwent surgery, and the operation’s success now necessitates post-operative therapy. Kazue stresses that her recuperation will require patience, and it is this health setback that has led to the interruptions in the production of Blue Exorcist.

As a devoted fan of Blue Exorcist, I’ve found myself in a bit of a pickle lately. The latest issue of Jump Square skipped over a new chapter, leaving us all hanging without our weekly dose of the manga. But fear not, fellow gamers and manga enthusiasts! The creators have announced that we can expect the story to resume in November when the magazine releases its December issue. However, this is all contingent on Kazue’s health. We, as fans, just want our beloved artist to be at their best, so if that means a brief hiatus now and then, we’re more than willing to wait. After all, it’s about the journey, not just the destination!

The Manga Industry Is Very Hard on Creators’ Healths

It’s no secret that Kazue is thrilled to get back into the world of Blue Exorcist, as this artist has been involved with the Okumura twins for almost two decades. Their story has captured the hearts of fans worldwide, and these days, the series is doing well on screen. The TV adaptation took a break following its first film, but came back strong with season two after five years. More recently, season three premiered under Studio VOLN in 2024, and there’s already news of a fifth season!

There is no denying that creators like Kazue are dedicated to their craft, and they will endure strife to see their vision through. The manga industry is a rather competitive one, and its rigorous schedule is infamous at this point. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has said many times he hardly sleeps due to all the work the manga requires. As for other creators like Yoshihiro Togashi, the rigors of being a mangaka are worse. The creator of Hunter x Hunter has been nearly crippled from his work; His back is in such bad shape from drawing all these years that Hunter x Hunter takes regular hiatuses that last a year or longer. So if Kazue needs time away from work to care for herself, we are going to back her all the way.

If you’re keen on reading Blue Exorcist as it’s currently on break, Viz Media manages its English translation. Moreover, you can stream the popular Blue Exorcist anime on Crunchyroll and Hulu too.
