As a long-time fan who’s been eagerly waiting for the global release of Blue Protocol, this news has left me feeling like I’ve just taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque in a game of Cosmic Perspective. The anticipation, the excitement, and the promise of exploring an immersive MMORPG world – all dashed against the rocks of unfortunate circumstances.
Bandai Namco has declared that the free-to-play MMORPG, Blue Protocol, which was launched in June 2023, will cease operations in Japan on January 18th, 2025. Interestingly, the Western release of this game, originally planned for this year by Amazon Games, has been called off as well.
“During the creation of Blue Protocol, we’ve built a robust partnership with Amazon Games. Unfortunately, it appears we won’t be able to share the game globally as planned, and both our teams are saddened by this turn of events,” the statement from the publisher conveyed recently.
Initially, I eagerly anticipated the launch of Blue Protocol, filled with excitement and high expectations. However, upon its release, it became evident that there were several challenges that needed addressing. Regrettably, the Western release date had to be postponed. Despite our dedicated efforts to get everything ready for you, Bandai Namco regretfully informed us that they won’t be able to deliver a service that lives up to everyone’s expectations.
It’s significant to mention that the primary cause for discontinuing the service might have been because the game didn’t meet expectations (underperformed). Earlier this year, when five unannounced projects were canceled, there were reports that a 21 million yen loss was due to an “underperforming” title, which many speculate is Blue Protocol. While Bandai Namco hasn’t explicitly confirmed it, the pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit together.
The publishing company is working on more web-focused projects, such as the game “Synduality: Echo of Ada,” which is currently being developed. Keep an eye out for future news and announcements in the interim.
