Bluesky saw a 763% rise in users in 2024, including 13 million new users in just the past month and a half

As an observer with over two decades of experience in the digital realm, I must admit, Bluesky’s meteoric rise in 2024 has been nothing short of astonishing. The platform’s ability to attract millions of users, particularly those departing from X, is a testament to its unique offering and a clear indication that it has filled a void left by the competition.

They say the future is unpredictable, but I didn’t expect it to be this Bluesky!

In the year 2024, there was a significant increase in user numbers for Bluesky, the social media site. Many individuals who were previously with X (previously known as Twitter) started migrating towards Bluesky. This year alone, approximately 22.9 million people registered on Bluesky. Remarkably, more than half of these new users – over 13 million – joined within just the last month and a half.

As someone who has spent countless hours navigating various social media platforms throughout my life, I find it intriguing to witness the evolution of a new platform like Bluesky. Having been introduced to it only recently as an invite-only community, I was initially skeptical about its potential for growth and impact. However, the swift transition from an exclusive group to being open to the general public within such a short span of time is truly remarkable.

The fact that Bluesky managed to amass over 3 million users at launch and subsequently gained over a million new sign-ups in just one week speaks volumes about its appeal and the demand for a more inclusive and user-friendly social media experience. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting to see how this platform continues to evolve and make its mark on the digital landscape.

2024 marked the achievement of Bluesky in realizing their objective of establishing federation, paving the way for a linked social network. This means that individuals can now operate their own data servers instead of depending on Bluesky’s system.

A year ago, I was just starting out with Bluesky, finding it quite basic. But this time around, I’m thrilled to see the platform has leveled up! Now, it supports hashtags, direct messaging, video sharing, and trending topics – features that are common across major social media platforms. It’s exciting to see these additions because they make Bluesky a compelling alternative to established sites like X, offering a more diverse and engaging experience.

2024 saw Bluesky introduce support for pre-made account lists, often referred to as “starter packs.” This innovative feature enables users to easily compile a list of accounts they wish to follow. For instance, we at Windows Central have created a starter pack featuring all our staff members who are active on the platform.

Due to an increasing number of people departing from X or seeking a less hostile social media environment than X, platforms like Instagram and Facebook, Bluesky attracted millions of new users. In fact, there are two third-party apps for Bluesky on Windows 11 (BeeSky and DarkSky), as well as the deck.blue website, which shares some design similarities with TweetDeck.

Below are all the new features from 2024 highlighted by Bluesky.
