Heed this notice: The conclusion of episode 15 from the eighth season of 9-1-1 is destined to be remembered as a tragic milestone, marking the first death of a main character in the series. However, the sorrow is particularly profound for Athena. Since its inaugural season, Angela Bassett has graced the cast as police sergeant Athena Grant, partnered with Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash, captain of Fire Department Station 118. As Bobby and his dedicated team of firefighters tackle the most harrowing emergencies on 9-1-1, Athena frequently takes on a supporting role as a police officer, later transitioning into her role as Bobby’s spouse.
In the storyline of “Contagion”, characters Athena and Evan “Buck” Buckley (played by Oliver Stark) play a more significant part. They pursue a ruthless scientist, Moira Blake from “9-1-1” (portrayed by Bridget Regan), in search of an antiviral for CCHF (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever). After giving the serum to Howard “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi), a paramedic from “9-1-1”, it appears to be just another close call. However, events take an unexpected turn. As team members of the 118 exit quarantine, Buck and Bobby are left behind. Rather than departing, Bobby decides to reenter the lab, lock himself in, and confess that he had been infected the entire time.
Bobby’s Death In 9-1-1 Season 8 Mirrors The Death Of Athena’s First Love
Both Died Before Their Time
In the climax of episode 15 from season 8 of 9-1-1, Athena frantically approaches a partition, imploring for another treatment. However, Bobby, who has come to terms with his fate, gently rejects her idea. Instead of desperately seeking a miracle, Bobby delivers an emotional farewell speech, expressing his desire to live on for Athena but acknowledging he can’t. A poignant scene follows where Bobby kneels in prayer as his life slips away.
It’s particularly hard on Athena to face this situation again because it echoes her past, where she had lost Emmett, the love of her youth, in a similar tragic turn of events. In “Athena Begins” (season 3, episode 7 of 9-1-1), we see flashbacks of Athena’s young adulthood where she meets Emmett Washington (Jeff Pierre), a fellow police officer who inspires her to join the force. Their love blossoms and they become engaged, but Emmett is killed while attempting to stop an armed robbery. For decades, Emmett’s death haunted Athena, and now there’s no one she can pursue that will ever fill the void left by Bobby’s gruesome, life-altering death.
Why Bobby’s Death Is More Tragic For Athena
Bobby Should Have Been Her Last Love
In a more straightforward manner, it can be said that compared to Emmett’s death, which she learned about indirectly, Athena found Bobby’s demise in the TV series 9-1-1 particularly distressing because she was present as it happened. This harrowing event had a deeper impact on her than simply discovering Emmett had been murdered. Moreover, this tragic turn of events is especially cruel for Athena’s character, given that she had worked hard to break down her defenses and love Bobby selflessly after the death of Emmett and her divorce. Just as Athena finally felt secure in her happy ending, the series 9-1-1 unexpectedly took it away by killing Bobby.
Ever since the season 1 finale of 9-1-1, Bobby and Athena have formed the central relationship in this first-responder series. There’s no doubt that they rank among the best couples within the entire 9-1-1 universe. By season 8, they are jointly constructing their ideal home, deeply in love and concentrating on their common future – a single one, as it was for Bobby and Athena: a unified life, a shared love, a united future. If anything, Bobby’s fate in 9-1-1 would have been heartbreaking on its own, but his death becomes even more poignant because of the hope they held for their future together.
