Bob’s Burgers Finally Puts the Spotlight On One of Its Best Hidden Gems

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of animated series over the years, I must say that Bob’s Burgers has truly outdone itself with its latest focus on Marshmallow. This enigmatic character, who has been a delightful part of the show since its early days, has finally stepped into the limelight and stolen the show in Season 15’s “Hope N’ Mic Night.

As a dedicated gamer (and fan of great animated series), I’m thrilled that Bob’s Burgers is cruising through Season 15. The latest episode has finally shone the limelight on one of my favorite characters – Marshmallow! Like many beloved animated shows, Bob’s Burgers has experienced some changes behind the scenes in recent years. With animation enthusiasts clamoring for more diversity among the creators bringing these characters to life, this has led to shows like Bob’s Burgers recasting several characters to ensure a broader range of perspectives and representation.

In the universe of Bob’s Burgers, Marshmallow stands out as a distinct and intriguing figure. Within this coastal town filled with memorable side characters who have shone through their recurring jokes or eccentric personas, Marshmallow takes the crown as the fan favorite. Making her first appearance in the pilot episode of the series, she has evolved into a more fleshed-out character due to a recast and a significant role in one of the best episodes in recent seasons, “Hope N’ Mic Night” from Season 15.

Bob’s Burgers Introduces a New Voice for Marshmallow

In the Season 1 episode titled “Sheesh! Cab, Bob?”, Marshmallow made her initial appearance. A transgender character who is part of the sex industry, she was among the guests invited to Tina’s birthday party by Bob, who worked as a cab driver during the night. However, it quickly became clear that Bob had some sort of relationship with her due to his casual greeting, “Oh hey, Marshmallow.” This was quite contrasting to her striking outfit at the time, and this exchange of greetings in their shared spaces (except when Marshmallow was angry with Bob) served as a recurring joke throughout the series.

Marshmallow wasn’t initially presented with any harmful intentions, but she emerged during the early, less polished days of the Bob’s Burgers animated series. The show didn’t fully develop its beloved tone until midway through its second and third seasons. Fortunately, some jokes that were considered regressive towards non-gender conforming characters haven’t aged as poorly as one might anticipate. Interestingly, Marshmallow herself was never the target of those jokes, and the characters who were have since been phased out.

Initially, David Herman was the voice actor for Marshmallow’s appearances in the show during its first eight seasons. From then on, Marshmallow either appeared without dialogue or in brief background scenes. However, a change occurred in Season 14 as Jari Jones took over as the voice of Marshmallow. Now, in the latest episode of Season 15, “Bob’s Burgers” is capitalizing on this new vocal talent and delving deeper into Marshmallow’s character, something fans have eagerly anticipated for quite some time.

Marshmallow Takes the Stage in Bob’s Burgers Season 15

In episode 6 of Season 15 titled “Hope N’ Mic Night,” the Belcher children persuade their parents to host an open mic night at the restaurant when the school talent show was called off. Marshmallow had obtained a flyer about it, and she requested a performance slot from Bob. Eventually, despite the financial implications, Bob consented due to the kids’ enthusiasm for the event. For Marshmallow specifically, this performance marked her first time performing in front of her parents.

Although the episode doesn’t solely revolve around Marshmallow but rather showcases various characters within the series, there’s a significant emphasis on fleshing out her character. Previously, our only knowledge of her was her back-and-forth with Bob and his infatuation described as her being someone who “comes and goes as she pleases…answers to no one, and she is truly free.” With Jari Jones lending her voice, Bob’s Burgers is providing more light on Marshmallow.

On the brink of closure, open mic night is miraculously salvaged when the performer unexpectedly reveals her connection with the Fire Marshal – she saved his life. Moved by this revelation, he relents and allows the night to continue. With a heartfelt rendition of “Seabird” by the Alessi Brothers, the audience is left to surmise the bond between the performer and her parents. The story unfolds much like many beloved tales from Bob’s Burgers, filled with emotion and thoughtfulness. As they watch their daughter take center stage, fans witness subtle signs of affection between them – her mother beginning to tear up – before sharing a tender hug once she finishes.

In this episode, it’s unclear if Marshmallow has a strong bond with her parents, but that doesn’t matter here. What stands out is that she reveals her true self during this moment, and they respond with nothing but love. This scene is exactly what fans have been anticipating, and soon we can expect to see more complex storylines and character development for Marshmallow beyond her recurring comic roles from previous seasons.
