Bocchi the Rock Crew Never Saw Its Memes Coming

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of anime adaptations, I must say that Bocchi The Rock has undeniably left an indelible mark on the anime landscape. The memes born from this series have been a breath of fresh air, making it irresistible for even the most casual viewers to dive into its unique world.

In 2022, I found myself utterly captivated when “Bocchi The Rock” made its grand entrance onto our screens, produced by CloverWorks. Most recently, this franchise has reached unprecedented heights with the release of two compilation films in Japan. Although these movies didn’t offer fresh content for the first season, they undeniably helped to amplify the buzz about this rocking series that’s made a significant impact in the anime world. This year at Anime Expo, ComicBook and I were privileged to sit down with the director of the show and Hitori Gotoh, the voice behind Bocchi, to discuss the viral memes sweeping across the globe as a result of this incredible anime phenomenon.

Initially, series director Keiichiro Saito shares his thoughts on how Bocchi’s character played a significant role in the anime becoming popular online: “I believe that the core of Bocchi the Rock lies in its main character serving as a powerful meme generator. Essentially, there’s always a way to incorporate Bocchi into anything you find on the internet. This intrigue draws in people who might not usually watch anime, as they wonder about the origin of the meme and become engrossed by the story. As a result, the show attracts a fresh audience.”

Bocchi Speaks

In response to the director’s comments, voice actor Yoshino Aoyama shared her surprise and astonishment at the widespread popularity of Bocchi The Rock. She explained, “I found myself observing videos featuring my voice being shared globally, with people getting excited and creating memes that spread my voice far and wide. This has never happened to me before. Interestingly enough, I can identify with Bocchi in terms of having low self-confidence.”

Aoyama added, “As the anime gained popularity, my thoughts were mainly about whether they’d embrace me and my portrayal. I was quite apprehensive about how it would unfold. However, as memes multiplied, I realized there were numerous people enjoying these memes. This led me to wonder if everyone was praising Bocchii as the best. Surprisingly, this speculation provided a boost to my self-assurance.”

As a gaming enthusiast and avid fan of anime, I’m eagerly waiting to uncover what lies ahead for “Bocchi The Rock”. Stay tuned with me here as we explore the latest updates about this rockin’ anime from Team Anime on ComicBook!
