Despite Randy Pitchford’s recent apology on social media platform X, his remark about dedicated fans paying $80 for a game appears to have caused ongoing controversy. In a lengthy post, Pitchford has again expressed regret over his statement and clarified that he doesn’t want anyone to spend more than they are comfortable with or feel is fair.
In a recent post, Pitchford clarified that he used the term “real fans” in reference to supporters of the Borderlands franchise, indicating that an estimated $10 rise in the price of Borderlands 4 wouldn’t significantly damage the game. However, he admitted that his choice of words – specifically “real fans” – might have been misunderstood as him undervaluing or taking the fan base for granted.
In his message, Pitchford clarified, “I’m sorry for any confusion. It’s essential to me that no one pays more than they feel is fair or comfortable. I strive to ensure that every customer believes they received a great value in our transactions.
In essence, the fellow was commenting on a post about potential Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2, predicting that if the price were to reach $80, the game might not succeed. My intention was to clarify that I don’t have control over the pricing but suggested that if there is indeed a $10 increase (as it seems the market trend), it wouldn’t be detrimental because Borderlands 4 is an exceptional game and numerous enthusiasts would recognize its value and desire it.
I realize that using the term ‘real fans’ may have upset some people, as it appeared I was making a significant statement when in fact I was merely trying to assist someone who seemed genuinely concerned about us. Unintentionally, this phrase seemed to suggest that I was underestimating the audience, which is far from the truth and not how I feel.
Later on in his post, Pitchford acknowledges that he’s aware of the practical aspects of business and finance, even though as an artist he prefers not to witness rising costs.
As a creator, I prefer not to increase prices as I believe everyone should be able to enjoy what we produce. I understand that businesses need to function and prices are influenced by the market and economy. Eventually, we’ll need to adjust, so our creative efforts can be sustainably compensated for the quality content we provide. My goal, though, is to bring entertainment, joy, and creativity into the world.
In this update, you’ll find that Borderlands 4 is scheduled to launch across platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and yet-to-be-revealed Nintendo Switch 2 on September 12. For a deeper analysis of Pitchford’s statements, feel free to explore our insights. Additionally, delve into what Pitchford shared regarding the budget allocated for Borderlands 4 and its projected cost.
I apologize for any confusion, but let me clarify my stance: I never wish for anyone to spend more than they feel is fair. In fact, I strive to ensure that every customer leaves our interaction feeling like they’ve received a favorable deal.
