As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Borderlands 4 has me both excited and intrigued. The series has always been a staple for me, offering a unique blend of FPS action, RPG elements, and humorous storytelling. The teaser about Lilith’s return and the hint at psycho-related antics has my curiosity piqued.
At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Gearbox Software officially unveiled what appears to be Borderlands 4. They hinted at a possible comeback for Lilith and more antics involving Psycho’s masks. During PAX West, they showcased some fresh concept art. However, it was during the Main Theater Show that Randy Varnell, the head creative officer, revealed four entirely new Vault Hunters, as reported by Games Radar.
It’s no real shock, given that each previous installment introduced four new playable characters. Following the pattern of past games, Gearbox is thoughtfully considering which power fantasies they want to fulfill for their players while ensuring the game remains engaging and innovative.
According to creative director Graeme Timmins, the team’s approach is to consider the Vault Hunters and identify “key desires and dreams that players might expect or imagine”. For instance, going back to the first Borderlands game, characters like a soldier were popular, featuring a straightforward, first-person shooter style, which was continued with Axton. Another example is the Sirens, who embody a fantasy of being a mage or sorcerer, even in our science fiction universe.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve always admired the diverse abilities of our Sirens in previous games, but with Borderlands 3, we aimed to redefine what was once Maya into Amara. Instead of staying focused on ranged attacks, we decided to make her more hands-on and melee-oriented. While there’s some overlap in their powers, we believe it’s crucial to keep things fresh and avoid repetition, opting for unique designs rather than sticking with the same formula from one game to another.
As a gamer myself, I can’t deny the significance of the RPG aspect in this game. We’re striving to infuse depth without overcomplicating things. When I press an action skill button on my character, I ponder about the level of management that takes place behind the scenes. Is it a straightforward, immediate effect, or does it require some strategic thought and management for maximum impact?
Borderlands 4 is currently being worked on for the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. As of now, there isn’t a specific release date set, but it’s expected to debut in the year 2025. Keep an eye out for further information and updates over the next few months.
