Borderlands 4 is an Improvement Over Borderlands 3 in Every Way, Even Subjective Ones – Gearbox CEO

Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, has shared his thoughts about the upcoming cooperative looter shooter game, “Borderlands 4”, on social media platform X. In a detailed post, he expressed his high level of confidence in the game’s quality, stating that the entire studio finds “Borderlands 4” to be superior to “Borderlands 3” across various metrics. This could encompass both quantifiable aspects such as visual clarity and smooth frame rates, along with more subjective factors like narrative quality.

Pitchford’s latest post discusses the average playing duration of Borderlands games, specifically comparing Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3. From his data, it appears that the average time spent on Borderlands 2 was approximately 13 hours and 42 minutes, with over 87% of all players having invested at least an hour into the game. In contrast, Borderlands 3 averages around 18 hours and 48 minutes of playtime, with a whopping 92% of players reporting more than an hour of engagement with the title.

In simpler terms, Pitchford suggests that BL3 appears to encourage a significantly higher amount of playtime compared to BL2. Previously, those who participated in a survey seemed to agree that real gameplay hours might be a more reliable indicator of quality than online user reviews.

Later, Pitchford explained why some players may have spent longer playing Borderlands 3 instead of its predecessor. He suggested it could be due to the fact that the newer game was enhanced compared to Borderlands 2. However, he also pointed out that these findings were based on an informal survey conducted through social media.

In essence, it appears that BL3 is preferred more by the individuals who participated in my survey compared to BL2. It’s important to remember that preferences can fluctuate greatly among people, as entertainment is inherently subjective. After all, we’re all unique and our tastes often diverge from one another. I might align with the majority on many fronts, but there are instances where I appreciate things others don’t, and vice versa. This diversity is what keeps artists and entertainers relevant – because we’re each distinct and our preferences are constantly evolving.

Eventually, Pitchford points out that Borderlands 4 appears to surpass its predecessor in several aspects, causing excitement across the entire team at Gearbox Software regarding its upcoming launch.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel thrilled as I’ve found myself convinced that BL4 is shaping up to surpass BL3 in all aspects, based on every benchmark and measurement we’ve employed, even subjective ones. This level of anticipation for the launch is electrifying!

The anticipated release of “Borderlands 4” has been set for September 12 on platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch (yet to be confirmed as Switch 2). As of now, the studio hasn’t disclosed the game’s price, but Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford hinted in a recent social media post that publisher 2K will reveal the cost for “Borderlands 4” soon.
